Recommend a new hobby/craft for me? :D

(Anonymous) 2015-11-07 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by the skill posts. I don't really have any creative skills. Well, I can play an instrument pretty well. But I'd like to start doing something where I can "make" something. Something that I can maybe give away as Christmas presents or birthdays, etc.

Anyone have any good creative hobbies that they'd recommend? What are the best craft skills?

jewelry making? You can get the supplies and tools at most craft stores as well as tons of books on it.

Could be interesting! I hardly wear jewelry myself so don't know much about what's in fashion. I like the idea of making cute bracelets or something though.

How about calligraphy. It is a good marketable job skill, plus you can make some pretty pictures for your folks too.

Marketable job skill, really? It sounds fun nonetheless. I remember doing it once in gradeschool when we had a medieval history unit.

True. My dad did it to make a couple extra bucks from time to time when he was younger. His normal handwriting is extra weird anyway, kinda like Tolkien script. And this is a guy who regularly writes things with a fountain pen.

If you live in a cold climate, knitting scarves is ridiculously easy to learn (there's so many youtube tutorials). It's also a skill that doesn't require that much investment (basic needles are cheap and yarn can be bought at Walmart)

My grandmother taught me the basic stitches, but I watched videos to learn how to cast on and bind off.

I live in a very cold climate! The one time I tried to make a scarf, I was crocheting. I used thin yarn and made tight stitches, and after days of work, realized I'd only made like eight inches worth of scarf so gave up. XD Maybe I should try again, knitting this time.

I'm partial to drawing, but it takes a lot of dedication and study to get good enough to send your stuff as gifts. It's rewarding though.

Knitting and crochet might be worth your time.

Baking is also good.

I like drawing a lot and always did want to be "good" at it, but never really put in the time or discipline with it. Maybe I should though, I did enjoy it and I love the idea of being able to create my own characters and scenes.

I found knitting and crocheting pretty easy to pick up. There's all kinds of tutorials and videos on the internet that can help a lot. For making presents, I've found crochet a bit more useful because it tends to go faster and there are a lot more patterns for the kinds of stuffed toys that I've made for a lot of my friends. I've made some beautiful knitting for friends too though and you might like that better.

I've heard of make your own foods. Not just something like a mason jar filled with the dry ingredients for cookies, but make your vanilla extract. If you were a bee keeper you could give away honey as gifts.

But knitting, crocheting, quilting, those are good craft skills.

I've seen knitting suggestions, and if that doesn't work out for you (because I have never found it easy/intuitive), might I suggest cross-stitch? You can make samplers with funny quotes as gifts for people!

Re: Recommend a new hobby/craft for me? :D

(Anonymous) 2015-11-07 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Cross stitch is fairly easy and the materials are relatively inexpensive, which is nice. There are lots of free patterns online, cheap cute patterns on etsy, libaries have books with patterns and you can do a lot with just one stitch.

Oh man I forgot about cross-stitch, I did that ALL THE TIME as a kid. Fun as hell and there are some beautiful pattern kits available.

+1

Also, if you get really into cross stitch, there are programs like PC Stitch that allow you to turn most digital images into cross stitch patterns (within reason--I wouldn't recommend really elaborate 3D images.)
