I liked the first anime better for a couple of reasons, and one definitely being their adorable friendship!

Fair enough. Pretty 50/50 for me on medium and which anime I prefer. They were all pretty enjoyable.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
meh.

Better Winry and Hawkeye in brotherhood imo

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
What? They had next to zero interaction. That would have been cool but that's just wishful thinking.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Not interaction. Characterization of females.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

...they were both awesome in the first series, too though? in fact I definitely liked Winry better in the first one.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
DA. Me too.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Thirded.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh. Riza was reduced to her love for Mustang. Even her signing up in the army was to keep close to him and not that much of a career choice. Talk about a waste of potential.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
That wasn't (just) about love, though. She stayed close to him so that she could take him the fuck out if he A) revealed the secrets of fire alchemy, or B) turned into a dictator who no longer cared about the people. She was willing to take the shot no one else could.

That they also had feelings for each other was a separate factor.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree here. I got the nagging feeling that she revealed the secret of fire alchemy to him because she was already in love with him, which is not a smart move.
Also, compare the fight Riza vs Archer in the anime: she keeps fighting, whatever happened to Roy and only collapse in tears for Roy after Archer is dead. Riza vs Lust in the manga however: the second Lust pretends Roy is already dead, Riza stops fighting and starts crying. How fucking weak and only defined by her love for Roy does she appears here?

YES

not that I ever watched Brotherhood or read more than the first five volumes of the manga, heh. But Winry and Sheska and their shenanigans are gold. (please give me fic recs someone)

I like Brotherhood better, but I really liked how in the 2003 anime they juxtaposed Alphonse and Scar as younger brothers and how they developed a mutual respect of sorts. None of that in Brotherhood, where I also felt Scar was kinda judged way too harshly but at least was alive in the end.

ALSO, I found the ending of the 2003 anime intriguing! And it was very smart to release a movie that explored it. Too bad they introduced the concept at like, the last episode or something.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I actually loved how the anime handled breaking away from the manga! The gate thing was a really risky plot point but I thought it was handled really well and ended up just being super fascinating. And Scar was better in the 2003, and don't get me started on Lust (who is one of the best characters in the series as far as I'm concerned!)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Please do get started on Lust.
*sits here with chin in hands*

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
and don't get me started on Lust

Man, when I think of things the 2003 anime did better, she's always the first thing that comes to mind (besides the animation itself). tbh I think it did a better job on the Homunculus in general.

I like the original anime more because it's what I saw first, then read through the manga and am still halfway into brotherhood. (Guess it can't hold my attention since it's basically the same as the manga and I know the story)

The original anime seems more fun than brotherhood, the filler episodes about Roy's gang were some of my favorite episodes. Even the manga seems more lighthearted than brotherhood, though possibly I'm mainly remembering the omake.

I also liked Wrath and Sloth more in this version, I really liked the idea they were based on Ed and Al's mother and Izumi's son.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I also liked the characterization they gave to Lust, making her the only homunculus to have real human emotions and desires to become human was super interesting and tragic. ;(
In brotherhood shes just evil and there's not much more than that.
I really like brotherhood, but I wish they hadn't left out all of Lust's personality and character in the process.

I agree, 100%.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
What a coincidence, I literally just finished watching the 03 series a few hours ago lol.
Anyways, yeah their friendship was pretty cute.
And Winrey in a military uniform is adorable hooly shit.

The 03 anime was my favorite too, maybe because that was my first introduction to FMA. Partially anyway. Not to mention I actually liked that it was sort of short; it didn't go on forever and the story and characters were really likable and interesting despite the length. It wrapped things up quickly, but in a satisfying way.

I did like the new characters in the second anime and there were definitely some good arcs, but it didn't stay with me in the same way. I guess in this case I prefer the original anime, even if it wasn't nearly as close to the canon story of the manga.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved that too! I also shipped them hard.
