I feel ya I have not romanced Solas, but I am a fan of him as a character. Good discussion seems to be impossible to find since it all boils down to whether you romanced him or not.

I also fully admit that I'm occasionally unfairly bitter about Alistair-romancers, having run into few too many who like to put down other romances (mainly Zevran) for some reason.

With a fanbase as big as BioWare's of course there's going to be some fans who are a bit...obsessive.

However, you can appreciate a romance and not feel that it's the ONLY romance! I like a good many of BioWare's romances, and the only reason I don't do all of them is simply because it would take too much time. (And I would probably get bored of replaying the game by that point. Look at how many romances are in Inquisition...while I have Inquisitors for every romance but Sera, there are several I probably won't complete.)

I haven't even reached the halfway point with my Solas!romance playthrough, but I've watched the cutscenes and liked them; I think it's a solid romance, albeit not a happy one. (I feel that way about Anders in DA2 as well though, so...)

And I'll readily admit that I love Alistair more than basically all other video game romances, but it isn't like he's the only decent romance in Origins. (Zevran's was REALLY good, and Leliana's was cute.)

Where is the hate coming from, though? When I go on reddit or BSN the guys are usually talking about their own romances. It isn't like the female fans are the only ones who enjoy that aspect of the games.

I like Alistair, but I don't want to be an obsessive fan about him.

I dislike Solas, but I don't want to be unreasonable about him either and am willing to accept that he's got a good story.

All the rabid fans, no matter which side they fall on, is a good reason why I don't really interact with the fandom.

On the one hand, I agree that male players are horrible to female players when it comes to romance, even though they were far more outspoken about the "inequality" in DAI than female gamers have ever been. Female gamers who wish their preferred origins/love interests were more popular are also throwing shade at female players who play or enjoy the most popular origins and LIs. It's become deeply petty, on top of the usual BW clusterfuck.

However, I really hate the Solas romance and wish it had never been implemented. I resent Solavellan players for essentially turning a fascinating character into an affirmation of their own cookie-cutter player characters and acting like female Lavellan is the only Inquisitor who matters, just because Solas will deign to smooch them a few times before he walks out on them. I don't think Solavellan fans themselves are boring because of their ship, but I find the Solavellan monolith has made fandom boring, and has soured me on a character I used to love.

OP: Right, that's exactly my issue with the crazy fans. They're making it difficult for other people to like the character or take fans seriously.

But in fairness I don't think any group of fans is possessed of "better" people. I think there's more opportunity for Solasmancers to unleash their crazy because of the canon-relevance to the plot his character has, but there's a part of every group that reduces their character to their romance.

The difference being is that since Solas (and Alistair) is tied to the main plot of the game, and the romance plays into that, the people that romance him have an excellent way of making it all about the romance.

If any of the other romances had that level of connection, we'd see similar attitudes from those fans.

I feel you, nona. I romanced Alistair in DAO and Solas in DAI but some of his fans made me hate him ( "he's totally justified on everything because sad backstory!" ) not to mention the tropes you find in most solavellan fics out there or how the fans act like his is the only worthwhile romance or that if you play a Lavellan you MUST romance him (my Lavellan went with Josie in my second game, thank you very much)...

I like Alistair more than I like Solas, but I guess that's because I don't really interact with the fandom anymore.

On the other hand, I would totally stan for Solas just to shut up the "dudebros".
