I didn't know there were American-made romance games, but the reason Japanese games are like that is because they employ Japanese romantic tropes and, based on nearly 13 years of reading manga, I'm pretty sure that "hounding your partner to tell you what's wrong until they give in and tell you and then you fix it for them and everything is puppy dogs and sparkles" is a fairly popular one.

Not just game designers. Romance in general tends to be horribly written in any medium.

This. I like romance but god, most of it sucks.

I know it's not super-relevant to your point but I can't help but be amused at the idea of people going to Nameless hoping for 'a cute game about dolls'.

I was kind of trying to reference this, but I didn't want to be too on the nose: http://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1006326-watership-down

Also, someone else actually played this? There are other secrets I could make, but I wasn't sure anyone would care. To sum up quickly: fuck Tei with a rusty rake, every other love interest is surprisingly well-written, and I missed out on the true ending by fat-fingering ???'s true name. (Screw erasing my save data; I am not replaying Tei's route.)

Ah, I've seen that. And yeah, Tei is...Tei is certainly something. I'm actually kinda into fucked-up bad ends, but his is the first I've seen where even the normal content is eyebrow-raising. Maybe you can look up the true end on YouTube? I love Red dearly, and the true end arguably takes place in his route (you get an altered version of the group photo CG, and his hand is still on your shoulder), so I enjoyed it. I could go on and on about Red, but I think that's besides the point.

What are your thoughts on Yuri?

(On second thought, that's more a question for fans of Kindred Spirits on the Roof.)

Anyway, outside Yuri's route, he seems like a creep. Inside his route, he's surprisingly likable and his behavior makes a lot more sense. Then the Triangle bad ending upheaves everything about him. Seriously, it's so far outside what I thought he was capable of that it makes me wonder how well I really understood him.

I'm not a fan of Yuri, for a couple reasons--firstly, the whole 'attempted sexual assault is just a wacky character trait' thing, but also because even though he's technically a lot younger than the heroine, he's coded as an adult, and she's 15. So to outside appearances it's literally a teacher seducing his unwilling 15-year-old student until she decides to give in. I know it's a bit more complicated than that, but still, that's how it reads.

He is better in his own route than he is in the others, though, I'll give him that. And he's still better than Tei. Except in that one ending. Though I kinda feel like the authorial intent behind that ending is 'we really want to do another fucked-up Tei end but we've already done so many we need to make this one a little different', since it does otherwise seem out of character for Yuri. Sure, he's a creeper, but when he definitively knows the heroine doesn't like him he just leaves. Maybe Tei's just a really bad influence.

In media romance is all about the drama, the thing the producers care most about is how to keep viewers, and general public like ridiculous drama. Love triangle is rehashed more than the Happy Birthday song but a number of viewers still eat it all up.

AYRT

I've never played this game I'm talking about general media.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I've never played a straight up dating game but this kind of made me think about how the Harvest Moon/Rune Factory games are set up in the same way but it's like you must talk to them every day AND give them presents or you'll never get married lol.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not marrying any fuckboy who doesn't give me daily turnips.

Hm, I've been thinking about getting this game. Is it worth playing? (within the realm of "ridiculous otome romance tropes" obviously, I've played and managed to enjoy some pretty trashy romance games haha)

It's definitely entertaining, although sometimes in a 'what the fuck did I just watch' sort of way. I'd actually recommend playing Dandelion (the company's first game) first, since they share a supporting character and his motivations make more sense if you've seen him in Dandelion. (Plus Dandelion is just a good otome game in general.) If you're down with the fucked-up stuff, Nameless is definitely a prime example. Seriously, it has 18 bad ends and 9 of them involve the same character. But it's a solid game for those of us who are into that sort of thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, Dandelion was another I was thinking about getting, so I'll make sure to play that first!

As the resident Steven Universe fan, I have a thing for traumatized but likable characters, and the trauma runs deep in Nameless. Most of the characters put up red flags in their behavior, but they're treated as red flags and seriously addressed. The key to romancing each character is finding a way to pass through all their defenses and get through to them on an equal level (at least within romance tropes.)

Also, this game does some seriously weird things with romance game structures. Contrary to my initial expectations, there was only one ending that smashed the fourth wall, but there's a lot of breaking of the internal walls as routes bleed into each other and lost memories start to surface again. The game will take notice if you deliberately aim for bad endings, and the basic framework twists into a pretzel as the final ending approaches.

That sounds intriguing, I'll have to give it a try. I'm a fan of traumatized characters too, and a twisty weird story structure is totally up my alley. yiss.

Katawa Shoujo. Literally one of the routes is 'don't be pushy, don't be a Japanese game romance trope, and you eventually get the girl to open up to you'. If you ARE pushy and demanding and presume stuff about her? Bad end. It's such a surprisingly well written VN - probably one of the best written VNs I know, because it actually bothered to consider how people would react to stuff. And probably the only one I can say that acting like a typical VN protagonist won't really get you anywhere.

I never pushed Hanako into anything, and I got her worst ending because I didn't ask her out on a date at one point. I retried from my last save over and over, then uninstalled the game. (Honestly, it was a pretty big blow to my mental stability at the time. Hanako reminded me a LOT of how messed up I was when I was young, so I wound up treating her like me, and I guess I wasn't supposed to do that.)

Majority of game creators are male. Do you really need me to explain why this leads to a lack of understanding about romance?
