Re: Factual mistakes made often in fandom

For example, in Kingsman fandom, Merlin is often drawn or written as having blue eyes. Merlin is played by Mark Strong, and Mark Strong's eyes are a very noticeable, very vivid hazel green (http://www.flickeringmyth.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/MarkStrong03.jpg). Here's another (http://kpitalrisk.free.fr/images/stars/23000/s_23953mark_strong_at_event_of_green_lantern.jpg), blow it up to see unequivocally hazel green eyes. NOT BLUE.

WhyTF fans think his eyes are blue is beyond me, and I want to send curt comments to all fan artists and authors who get this wrong, but then I remember I'm polite and this is silly.

The eyes are usually a common point of confusion.

I've been reading a lot of HP fic lately and Sirius' eyes are occasionally gray, sometimes brown, other times blue. I don't recall what the books say, the wiki says gray, and Gary Oldman's eyes are...? OR is the fic writer using their own fancast? I don't even know, but it bothers me alot. Especially when it's blue. I know his eyes weren't blue.

(I haven't seen "Kingsmen" yet, but I remember Mark Strong's character's eye color being somewhat of a plot point in "Sherlock Holmes" (2009), so the thought of someone mistaking them for blue is a tad startling to me.)

AYRT -- Ooh, I've never seen that movie, in what way do his eyes come into play?

PS. I LOVE Mark Strong's eyes, which is why this whole thing is such an issue for me. :)

I looked at the linked images. I agree, that's a good eye colour, whateer you call it. Then again, I am very biased toward hazel eyes.

AYRT -- MINOR SPOILERS for the "Sherlock Holmes" movie I mentioned

Mark Strong was Lord Blackwood, the main big bad. About halfway through the movie, Sherlock is investigating another noble-type guy (played by James Fox). He notes that this character and Lord Blackwood "have the same irises, a rare dark green... which are only passed down through direct blood line which makes by necessity either brothers or in this case, more likely father and son." So this character confesses he's Blackwood's biological father and sheds some light on Blackwood's backstory at that point, IIRC. (Also IIRC, there was also a nice, lingering close-up on Strong's eyes at this point.)

(I want to say I have no idea WHY that stuck with me as much as it did, but I'll admit it's because I have weird green eyes myself and was interested to see someone else with them get called out in this movie. :D )

Slightly random but related - in the tiny Blackwood/Coward fandom, there was an ongoing debate over whether Hans' eyes were blue or green that was never really resolved. But I don't think anyone ever mistook Mark's eye color. It's very distinctive!
