How do you start over?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-17 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I had these plans, this course my life was gonna go. I was gonna do this, go here, earn that degree, get this job, do that, bam. Plan.

Plan no work. Due to things, I am forced to abandon the plan halfway through. And... I don't know what I'm supposed to do now. Like now I have to start over from scratch, because everything I've done has been very specifically for this particular course of action, and figure out a whole new direction. And I just can't think of how to do it.

FML, man.

Do you really have to abandon it, or can you just put it on hold for a while?

OP

It's basically a lost cause. I have the option of saying I'll go back to it later, but the support network I had for it will most likely not be there anymore, so I dunno.

Damn.

Well, it's worth a shot if you're really serious about it. At least try to obtain references and maybe pick up where you left off elsewhere?

I dunno. I had to put things on hold for 4 years and start over after an illness, so I know things can seem impossible, but sometimes it's not as difficult as you think to pick up where you left off.

I guess. I haven't like burned any bridges or anything already. Just trying to process and accept fate and maybe wallow a little in utter disappointment.

Are you pretty well back on track now?

Better than back on track. That break made me motivated to accomplish more than I ever thought possible.

I hope everything works out for you, anon. It might seem like the end of the world, but who knows? Maybe not.

Step by step really.

The first part is accepting that, distancing yourself from the original plan, and set things in motion to go on another course.

If you're the adventurous kind, it helps seeing this as a an unplanned adventure, or a blank slate in which you can paint again.

You might take the time to reinvent yourself - it's not necessarily, but it can actually help - new wardrobe, new hair, new friends.

Sometimes just trying or doing random stuff can help you figure out where you DO want to go.

Say yes to things. Especially things you haven't tried yet.

But it takes a while. Give yourself time. That's all I have.

I never liked adventure or surprises. I am obviously so much more comfortable with firm plans. :P New friends would be great, because mine are kinda shitty. I also don't know how to get those. Bah. Life.

Are you in a position to pick up new hobbies?

Re: How do you start over?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-17 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Probably. I guess it depends on the hobby (no big initial investment type things).

I don't know where you are in life, but I find that post-college, that's often our best way of meeting people with common interests.

Makes sense. I guess I should start reading the events section of the paper or something.
