True. I work with AIDS patients. They are people like everyone else and suffer greatly from this.

That has to be a tough job sometimes. I hope you have good support too.

I lost someone I knew to AIDS related pneumonia when I was younger.

It was hard to see other people pull away from him and a lot of people complained about him being allowed near children and allowed to work while he was still fairly healthy. He never really let anyone see how it made him feel, but it made us sad.

If anything, I was always worried I'd make him sick because his immune system was so shitty. :/

I'm sorry about your friend, that must have been hard to go through.

I am lucky, the people I work with are fairly healthy. Or they have good support or positive attitudes. I've been fortunate in that the brief amount of time I spend with them, they share a lot with me and they are all very different, but are basically going about their lives.

SA:

I mean they are currently healthy when I see them. That doesn't mean that they haven't suffered in the past. Depending on how long they've had the virus, they may have been sick off and on throughout their lives. But medication that suppresses it is usually given right away now, so they are generally happier and healthier. But yeah, they still go through a lot of bad stuff, and I think it's horrible to say that they deserve it. It's like saying someone deserves cancer. Some people I've worked with say they behave weirdly, but honestly if I had such a crippling disease I'd be filled with uncertainty and anxiety too.

Wow, that's so stupid. That's some really glaring ignorance of how HIV works, there.

Reminds me of the video I saw recently about the HIV-positive man in...was it Sweden? somewhere around there...who wrote a sign saying he was HIV-positive and stood out in a public square asking for hugs. It's really important to destigmatize it. Nobody will get HIV from hugging or otherwise touching an HIV-positive person and I feel like we all learned that fact in middle school???

It sucks to hear people said such things about the guy you knew.
