Re: Charlie Sheen - NOT WINNING!
The way they were talking about it was actually pretty disgusting.
Also, it's not fucking karma. HIV does not go after bad people. It doesn't only happen to people who do drugs or have lots of unprotected sex. Those things put you at a higher risk, and that is why people recommend you don't do them.
It doesn't matter how you contract it. Everyone deserves good treatment and support. Perpetuating the negative stigma attached to HIV is harmful to people who have to live with it.

I lost someone I knew to AIDS related pneumonia when I was younger.
It was hard to see other people pull away from him and a lot of people complained about him being allowed near children and allowed to work while he was still fairly healthy. He never really let anyone see how it made him feel, but it made us sad.
If anything, I was always worried I'd make him sick because his immune system was so shitty. :/

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)I am lucky, the people I work with are fairly healthy. Or they have good support or positive attitudes. I've been fortunate in that the brief amount of time I spend with them, they share a lot with me and they are all very different, but are basically going about their lives.
Re: Charlie Sheen - NOT WINNING!
(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)I mean they are currently healthy when I see them. That doesn't mean that they haven't suffered in the past. Depending on how long they've had the virus, they may have been sick off and on throughout their lives. But medication that suppresses it is usually given right away now, so they are generally happier and healthier. But yeah, they still go through a lot of bad stuff, and I think it's horrible to say that they deserve it. It's like saying someone deserves cancer. Some people I've worked with say they behave weirdly, but honestly if I had such a crippling disease I'd be filled with uncertainty and anxiety too.
Re: Charlie Sheen - NOT WINNING!
Reminds me of the video I saw recently about the HIV-positive man in...was it Sweden? somewhere around there...who wrote a sign saying he was HIV-positive and stood out in a public square asking for hugs. It's really important to destigmatize it. Nobody will get HIV from hugging or otherwise touching an HIV-positive person and I feel like we all learned that fact in middle school???
It sucks to hear people said such things about the guy you knew.

I think if they're going to do a story on HIV and informed consent, the media has a responsibility to make an effort not to demonise an entire group of people when the vast majority are doing the right thing.
Basically, I don't trust the media to do the right thing when fear-mongering will attract more interest.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 09:26 am (UTC)(link)a) good people die, too. when someone says "bad person is dead, kinda had it coming" they do not devalue the good people who die, either. Nor does it really perpetuate the stigma of HIV. If he got crabs or lice people would say the same thing - probably more loudly, even.
b) it's not even like this is a death sentence anymore. It's not like his life expectancy is so very great, anyway, what with the drugs and stuff. And of course he deserves treatment and support, but having HIV doesn't suddenly make him less of a jerk, either.
I guess I wouldn't say it to his face, but yeah, he kinda had it coming.
Re: Charlie Sheen - NOT WINNING!
My issue with saying someone deserves HIV specifically is that I don't think anybody does deserve it. Where do you want to draw the line? I mean, we could have a scale. We could start with people who were born positive or contracted it in childhood and people who received blood transfusions from positive donors. Then on the other end we could have intravenous drug users who knowingly share needles, or people who regularly engage in unprotected sex with strangers. Who would you feel comfortable saying deserves it? Should the people on one end of this scale get priority for treatment?
The difference between HIV and Lice is that you can completely eradicate Lice. If people are telling you that you're disgusting and you deserve your Lice, you can buy the shampoo and comb or shave yourself. You don't have to live with it, and I've never heard of anyone dying from Lice.
No, HIV does not make anyone a saint. Didn't say it did.
Okay, no. We have treatments now that can give people living with it a much better chance of living a long life than they would have had in the past. However, as with any treatment, how well you respond to it depends on a number of things: your health and age, what strain you have, your ability to access medical treatment and drugs. There are absolutely still people dying as a direct result of contracting HIV, even in rich countries.
