Jessica Jones thread (probable spoilers)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it worth watching? I don't mind spoilers at all, I just wanna hear more about it before I sink the time into it.

I'm now two episodes in and so far very much yes so. But only if you like things that are dark. Because this is really dark.

I'm biased and enthusiastic anon from yesterday's thread and I'd definitely say yes. philstar is right, though, it's a lot darker than the usual MCU fare, including Daredevil. If rape bothers you, it's just been revealed that Jessica was raped (it didn't happen in the comics, so I was hopeful), but so far there have been no flashbacks.

If you don't mind the dark tone then it's definitely a show worth watching. The cast is amazing, the writing great and the characters engaging and real (too real in Kilgrave's case, maybe).

I'm three episodes in atm and I'm enjoying it a lot, echoing both Phil and the anon above me that it is not a happy show and Kilgrave is a very nasty piece of work. If you're good with dark subject matter though then I'd say give it a shot to see how you like it.

Not that I'm watching a lot of new tv shows these days, but I think Jessica Jones is the best show I've seen in years. (Well, along with Daredevil. I'm fond of both.)

Just, ah, like everyone else has said, be prepared for some dark, difficult material, because the tone of the show is heavy and Kilgrave is profoundly disturbing and feels like someone who could exist IRL. He's ah...interesting, not so much his motivations because he seems pretty simple and self-centered, but David's acting is terrifying in a way that's...I wouldn't personally say "fun to watch", but yea, "interesting".

Beyond that, it's a solid show (I just realized I've not been bored while watching it...not once. Which almost never happens); the writing, the cast, the directing, the characters, I think they got everything right. JJ feels much more realistic than any of the other MCU projects, at least partially because the characters are all so flawed. If that kind of thing appeals to you, then def give it a shot; I didn't need past half an episode before I was hooked. I don't think you have to watch long to know if you're going to like it or not.

It's just another example of comic culture and the superhero genre being hostile and violent towards women. Steer clear.

I can't really argue with this. 8(

I don't know what the show is doing but the comic it was based on was the opposite of that. Aside from the main character being a woman, Jessica Jones is pretty fierce. The whole point of her story is overcoming what was done to her and ultimately besting the monster that almost ruined her life.

Isn't that basically every radfems dream scenario? Downtrodden and abused woman breaks free from the chains of the patriarchy and defeats the male monster. How is that story hostile towards women?

This is accurate to the show, at least so far (only on episode 4). Jessica Jones is such a strong character. To claim this show is all about glorifying violence against woman is kind of ridiculous.

JFC. Nobody raped daredevil did they? Did anyone even try? No, but now they're doing a female superhero? Sure why the fuck wouldn't we have her raped! Fuck marvel. I don't even want a Captain Marvel movie now.

"Why won't major shows handle difficult topics like rape?"

"How dare you have a character raped!"

I'm going to admit I haven't seen this yet, but I've heard a lot of praise for how they've handled this. They have a character dealing with trauma without actually showing the trauma happening like most shows with this rating would, for shitty tawdry effect. Overcoming that trauma is a major character arc rather than a shitty fridging sort of thing.

I don't think the solution to a thing being handled poorly in the past is never to depict the thing.

That's the entire reason I'm not watching the show.
