Oh man, Hozier is so brilliant. Overplayed or not, Take Me To Church is a perfect song, especially with that chilling music video...

(Anonymous) 2015-11-22 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's a great song but I haaaate the video, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-22 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I thought it was extremely powerful, and hit me really hard - I'm gay, and it sent a really chilling message. Especially since it was around the time of the Russian homophobia stuff was headlining.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, I am too. It left me crying and shaking lol

Like, maybe it's silly. But I was nottttt expecting that and idk

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely agree. It was one of the most beautiful and powerful music videos I've seen. And for me it made the song a lot more powerful too. I mean, I know the video didn't actually change the meaning of the song, but I find the song a lot more powerful and moving in the context of the video, so now whenever I hear the song it's imbued with the meaning and emotion of the video.

Agreed. I loved the song until I saw the video, now the song makes me physically sick to my stomach whenever I hear it. I guess that goes to how powerful the song and video are together, but it ruined the song for me.

After reading the replies you got, I finally (and very belatedly) realized that you were NOT talking about this video: Sergei Polunin, "Take Me to Church" by Hozier, Directed by David LaChapelle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-tW0CkvdDI
which was the only one I had seen - and incredibly beautiful.

I'm not sure if I should watch the other (original?) version now (I want to keep "my" version).

I love both those songs! They're excellent. I don't listen to radio so they def didn't get overplayed for me (Well, okay, 'Arsonists Lullary' IS in a lot of fanmixes, but I like it and don't mind), but I also haven't heard most of their other stuff because I rarely listen to whole albums. (That aren't tv, game or movie soundtracks, or favorite bands from when I was younger.)

I should listen to it I guess...

Try "Angel of Small Death & The Codeine Scene", honestly I have no idea how that one isn't already overplayed as hell on the radio, it's probably one of my favourite songs of his, and for Hozier it's...really upbeat, even if the lyrics themselves hint at drug addiction (and/or bad relationships).

Upbeat? Haha, I can barely imagine Hozier doing anything upbeat, but I am intrigued! Thank you for the suggestion! I will youtube it.

You're more than welcome. It's a really good song, and definitely upbeat for Hozier. :) I'd be so curious to hear what you think of it.

It was good! Though I've only listened to it the once so far, lol. I will probably be downloading it to put on my phone!

(And you're right in that it is upbeat for Hozier. Still sounds like them, but it's a different feel.)

:D I'm glad you liked! Hozier's stuff is definitely all worth giving a listen to. If you enjoyed that one you also might enjoy "Like Humans Do".

I've actually heard this one before but I didn't realize it from the title, haha. It's good too! I haven't heard a song by them that I didn't like.

I should just listen to everything they've done...

I'm so bad at that.

Take Me To Church is such an amazing song, but I HATE the guy's voice. I love the lyrics, though, and there are a few cover versions I adore. Still, I selfishly wish he'd stick to song-writing and let other people sing his songs.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Would you be able to specify what you don't like about his voice? /I'm just curious, because it feels like a fairly nice, standard tone and timbre to me./

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't hear that song enough on the radio to get sick of it, but the weirdest thing was that it always seemed whenever I did hear it, be it on the radio or in a commercial or something, I came in around the time of the chorus. It took me actively going to Spotify and playing the song on my own to finally hear it in full :p.

I do like the song. I like that kind of grand, dramatic, indeed, haunted, as your friend described it, sort of music in general, so I may have to check out the rest of the album at some point.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
personally, what I love about this song the most is the very beginning, so I'm not even sure if I would get so hooked on it, if I had just heard the chours, like you did :)

Man, overplayed is right. I didn't love Take Me to Church to begin with, but any song can be messed up by how much the radio likes to milk its favorites, including several that I did love the first few times I heard them. :/ (Excellent example right now is Ex's and Oh's. Great song. Absolutely sick of it. I change the station almost every time I hear it now.)
