Suikoden secret!

Regarding POC- to be fair, most of the POCs are more like people of other species... but yeah, at least we got some POC humans in S2 and S3. And even to some degree in S5.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-22 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
personally, I was surprised the amount of POC appearing in tierkries. We had an entire magedom with dark skinned folks!

(Anonymous) 2015-11-22 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, thanks. Forgot about Tierkreis. Yes, I <3 the crazy Janam folks (well, the kids too, at least they were nice).

I care! And every Suikoden I played was great! Though I haven't played all of them. I still remember Suikoden 2 having a cool werewolf guy who was black.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-22 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
By POC are we just talking about black people?

because there are loads of Asian characters in Japanese games.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-22 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't think they are. Sure suikoden has black people, but it also has a wide variety of other races. Romani, afro americans, arabs and the list goes on.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-22 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
lol

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
When people talk about POC in games, they're usually talking about fantasy games, not ones set in Japan. Nice try.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Are you new? No they are not. There's a significant contingent of people that bitch about this who think any anime character that isn't like a squinty eyed Asian caricature is white lol.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm older in fandom than you are in years lmfao.

We are not talking about the same people. You're thinking of standard idiot gamers, I'm thinking of SJWs. SJWs, for all their flaws, know better than to think characters who live in Japan and have Japanese names are white. They're mostly the first ones to bitch at anyone who does think that.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
...I'm talking about the enormous quantity of games MADE in Japan. Most Japanese games have Asian characters, fantasy included.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-22 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
UGH I KNOW I AM SO WITH YOU OP

Suikoden is my favorite game series of all time, despite attempts by the fandom to shit all over the fact that I prefer 3-5 over 1 and 2. If I could step into a parallel world where it was real, I would live in Karaya, no question about it.

On top of having extremely well-rounded female characters in every role from commanders, queens, and fighters to mages, strategists, and support, and POCs, it also has the broadest selection of character designs. There are adults!! In their 30s and 40s!! Not everybody is a waify teenager! There are large ladies and dumpy men, there are ugly folks and pretty folks, there are people from all walks of life with their purpose to carry out. Which, you want to say, naturally, given that the theme is gathering the 108 destined people to build your army, but nobody really stops to think about the awesome characters. Like Geddoe and Lucia and Chris and everyone at Budehuc, and Ferid and Arshtat, and Raja and Skald, and Kika and Lino and ugh just everybody.

At risk of angering fans . . .

When was the last time a really good Suikoden made it out of Japan? I'd say III back in 2002.

I personally think IV had a great story especially if you link it with Rhapsodia. It wasn't as grandiose as Sui1-2-3, but it was still a true Suikoden story. Maybe its just me but I loved how they brought back Ted, showed a bit of his past and the way he acted 300 years ago. The political play that was about gaining control of the archipalego was a solid plot too. SuiV really did feel like a "whatever" title. But then again, Tierkreis, even if it's a spinoff brought back that same old Sui feeling. It might look ugly, but the characters and the new world with the dimension jumping/merging together was a refreshing experience. Let alone the fact that we see the 108 stars failing.

So there were GOOD suikodens, but the small errors like SuiIVs extremely long shipjourneys and big fields, Tierkreis' dub from the hell, ruined it for many fans.

Was the dub even the problem with Tierkreis? I mean, the heroes are special people chosen by destiny, and the villains are bad because they believe in destiny. That's not ludonarrative dissonance, that's narrative-narrative dissonance.

Re: At risk of angering fans . . .

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
The dub overall wasn't horrible, but the worst problem was with the main voice actor. He kept talking and yelling at the speed of light. I wouldn't have had a problem with it had it been, say, a lesser-known Star of Destiny who only has one spoken line in the entire game.

I wouldn't say heroes are "chosen by destiny." Destiny apparently chooses whoever the hell it feels like. In fact, some villains end up on your Tablet of Promise, including a few folks you end up fighting with to the bitter end (S3).

it's not our fault Konami dropped the entire franchise and shifted to pachinko games.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I love Suikoden, it's probably my favorite series of games... but they're so hard to find and expensive now that I don't blame people for not knowing about them. (I and II can be downloaded for free, but they're not as good as the rest with diversity, both as far as POC and female characters go.)

Uhhhh....

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Okay but, that's only one game (series)?

On a side note, whenever I see the word "whining" on the internet it's almost always followed by something like this

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
One franchise, rarely published outside of Japan, should satisfy me?
