I always thought that this is basically the kid rated version of a slasher movie. I always thought the violence was really OTT and I never liked the movies when I was a kid (and still don't). But I also wasn't too fond of the Looney Tunes kind of humour, and these movies are basically a live action version of that.

(And I have to say that I have no clue how this movie got a rating for kids but I always assumed that it was probably this weird disconnect between violence=okay and anything even remotely sexual=Mature rating thing a lot of (especially US American movies) have. But idk.)

............you make an astonishing amount of sense, my gosh. I hate slasher movies too.

My friend, you have opened my eyes to a new, shiny world where things make more sense. I want to shake your hand and buy you the drink of your choice.

Ha! You're welcome. I was talking to my mother about these movies some time ago (we were talking about holiday classics) and I basically went "Wait, those movies actually kind of follow a pattern that seems oddly familiar" - it was ... interesting.

Different types of violence affect the severity of the rating too. Bloodless violence, which was all these movies had, tends to get a much more lenient pass no matter how severe it is. Getting knocked unconscious with a huge object that would realistically cause a concussion or permanent brain damage = ok. A relatively harmless shallow cut that sprays blood everywhere = horrible.

Yeah, I think that's so weird. Also reminds me of some of the weird reasons things get or don't get mature ratings in my country. A lot of Asian crime or action movies that feature martial arts get mature ratings here even though they aren't even that brutal while movies like Final Destination are rated 16 and up - the reason for rating Final Destination that low was "Because the violence in this movie is not executed by humans" (they meant "lol, freak accidents making heads explode like watermelons are not as bad as some guys punching each other a few times").

I was thinking it was Looney Tunes humour as well. Kudos for being the one to mention that.

I always hated Roadrunner cartoons for the exact same reason.
