LMAO, OP. I was *just* thinking about how awful this franchise is. And not even so much that it's unbelievable, but because of how messed up it really is.

I never watched the third (because, really?), but even in the first, the Wet/Sticky Bandits did not deserve half the violent things Kevin did to them. They may have been thieves, but these movies just enforce the painfully stupid idea that it's okay for horrifying things to happen to bad guys just because they're bad guys, no matter how big or how small their crimes. And it's perfectly okay for the "good guy" to deal out the violent treatment because he's the good guy. *gag*

I would have agreed with this, if they weren't in the habit of flooding and ruining their victims' houses just for the fun of it. After that: make those assholes suffer, Kevin.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-11-22 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
my kid brother liked them when we were growing up, so only by the fact of having siblings I saw the third one. Similar premise, but at least this one is just "kid is sick and has to stay home from school" not "PARENTS FORGOT AN ENTIRE CHILD AT HOME FOR AN INTERNATIONAL VACATION"

Like really for real. Maybe because I came of age in the last 15 years where now I can't even watch ~romantic~ "I'll stop him/her before they get on the plane!" scenes because that's not a thing that can remotely happen anymore, but AN ENTIRE CHILD FORGOTTEN. (or the second one where he just.... gets on the wrong plane somehow?????)

Well I have seen a theory around that he grows up to be the bad guy from saw so I don't think you are alone in thinking he is a bit to cruel.

I think I liked the first one when I was a kid but I haven't seen any of them in recent years to be able to judge if that's still the case, I do know that 'pain=humour' types of comedy don't appeal to me much so if they're full of that chances are I wont like them either.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-22 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't stand these movies, because it totally breaks my suspension of disbelief: how in the hell do you forget one of your own kids when it comes to travel?

Not to mention in this day and age, it could simply be solved as getting an ADT security system, and Kevin gets a Lyft/Uber drive to the airport with his smartphone. Problem solved.
kaijinscendre: (Default)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-11-22 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
1) People (often tragically) forget children in cars around 30 times a year.
2) It doesn't take place in this day and age so that point is moot.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-22 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
They don't forget him as such. One is the mums does a head count in the car, and their (also blond) neighbour kid is sitting in their car with his back to her, so she assumes it's Kevin (because when they're rushing off on holiday, why would a neighbours kid be in their car?) and it's on,y at th airport they realise the neighbour kid isn't/wasn't kevin and neither he or kevin is there. Plus they all overslept, and Kevin was sleeping alone in the attic, so when one adult says 'oh, yeah, Kevin is already in the car', the other adults arent going to know any different or are going to bother to go all the way to the attic to check when they've a million other things to do, and they've just been told gets in the car.

"how in the hell do you forget one of your own kids when it comes to travel?"

People forget their kids places all the time. Kids DIE because their parents forget them in the car and leave them there all day.

"Not to mention in this day and age, it could simply be solved as getting an ADT security system, and Kevin gets a Lyft/Uber drive to the airport with his smartphone."

It was 1991. Are you seriously unable to suspend your disbelief because a movie made in 1991 doesn't have the things that are available in 2015? When you watch movies from the '80s, do you balk at people playing records and using landline phones?

My mom told a story once about how, when I was a baby, she was standing in my grandma's driveway packing up the car before we left for home. She set the little bassinet-style thing I was sitting in down for a moment, finished packing, she and my dad got in the car...

...and drove off, with me still sitting quietly in my little bassinet in my grandma's driveway. Fortunately, they realized it fairly quickly and returned, and my grandma was there and I was totally fine. But yeah, that sort of thing can happen quite often.

Anywho, as for these movies, I only ever saw the first one, and I haven't seen it since I was a little kid. I recall liking the movie, but mostly I mainly remember seeing it in the theater with other kids in a daycare group, and crying at the ending, and wanting my mom when I got back.

I always thought that this is basically the kid rated version of a slasher movie. I always thought the violence was really OTT and I never liked the movies when I was a kid (and still don't). But I also wasn't too fond of the Looney Tunes kind of humour, and these movies are basically a live action version of that.

(And I have to say that I have no clue how this movie got a rating for kids but I always assumed that it was probably this weird disconnect between violence=okay and anything even remotely sexual=Mature rating thing a lot of (especially US American movies) have. But idk.)

I loved the first one as a kid (not sure I even saw the others, believing that the same (?) family left their kid at home while on vacation (?) THREE TIMES is too insane).

But I haven't watched them sense and when I'm reminded of this franchise I just think back on how violent and crazy it was and wonder at the fact this was a 'children's movie'.

They are grotesque movies. I remember seeing the first one on TV and really hating all the violence that yes, should have seriously injured or killed someone (and how the fuck do you forget you kid? No fucking way.)

I've never seen all of the second one or any of the third one (there's a third one?) - just so very turned off by the whole idea.

If you're a 'Grinch' for hating these movies, then so am I.

IM3 reminded me of this movie with homemade weapons made from things brough in a store.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, Home Alone 3 is considered a "Holiday Classic?"

(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think you really had to watch it as a kid. I think we've gotten used to companies like Pixar writing films ostensibly aimed at kids which are designed to be appreciated by the whole family. Home Alone wasn't that.

Also, it's slapstick humor, which is something of a dying artform now. There's a flimsy pretext for it, but if you're watching for the plot around which the slapstick set pieces are draped, you're going to be disappointed. Now, it's certainly possible to have them draped over a good plot, with depth and character and stuff, but it's just not really a genre requirement.

Finally, for all the posters saying that the punishment was disproportionate, etc., there's a big difference between punishment and defense. If Kevin hunted them down to execute retribution, that's punishment. Here, they could have left the house at any time, and didn't. At no point is Kevin going to sit back and say "yep, I've hurt them enough". Until they back off, he's acting in self-defense with the tools he has available.
