I really had a phase of hating kids, I'm more relaxed now, but I can tell you why:

- They're really loud, and have shrieky voices and I like quiet.
- They're very needy, constantly want/ask something and don't leave you alone.
- a lot of them seem permanently sticky/dirty and I genuinely dislike being touched by them.
- They also break things a lot, and I don't want them near my stuff.
- You can't always trust them with pets
- They can be very disruptive of certain environments (movie theatre, restaurant etc).
- You can't really have an intelligent conversation with them.

+ added factor that if you're a woman of childbearing age people harass you about having kids. Which forces me to have conversations about it,and really conversations about kids bore me to tears.

I also dont have much to compensate it. Like there's not much I like about kids, or that interests me.

So yeah, I used to say I hate kids.

But really it's more like utter disinterest and intense dislike of having to be in the same room as them.

You say "they" and I can tell you that kids come in a huge, huge, huge variety -- just as huge a variety of behaviors and attitudes as adults.

Kids are not a monolith, and they are not a different species from adults.

So this may have been your experience, but none of the things you've listed applies to all or even most kids, but only to a mix-and-match fraction of them.

Of course they're not a monolith, but a lot of them do check multiple boxes on that list. Especially very young ones.

I mean, most 4-year olds ARE loud, needy, sort of dirty (unless *you* wash them) and will touch things without permission.

And I don't see it as malice - they haven't really been socialized yet and their brains are still in development. But understanding it doesn't make me want to be around them.

The diversity does become more clear once they get to maybe 8-10, and at that point the also become better at actual conversation.

I'm actually quite good with teens, but the young ones do seem to share a lot of qualities I dislike.

Don't act like kids have nothing in common with each other. They are kids because they aren't adults, lack the maturity and understanding and communication skills adults generally have, and so forth. Kids are not a monolith but there are common traits to the group simply due to age, experience, and physical mental social maturity levels.

Of course exceptions exist but it's asinine to say since 1 out of every million kids can have a conversation at an adult level, someone must not say they dislike kids or that "kids" is a meaningless group word.

I don't hate kids, but even I can see the general accuracy of kallanda_lee's points. Sure there are some really quiet kids, and some kids who would never try to ride the family dog even though they're too heavy, and some who don't need that much validating attention from adults. But in my experience, a number of the points on that list will probably be true of any given kid at any given time.

And you are the reason I say I 'hate' kids. Because if I say 'I don't like being around children', SOMEONE always has to say 'oh but you'd like being around MY kids/not all children!!!!

When i say I hate them, they just stare at me like I'm crazy and shut up. Works for me.
