I’ve recently fallen hard for a pairing that was never super popular, but at least had a small following up until a few years ago. One character left the show and what little fandom there was for them together has since shriveled up and died.

It’s not going to stop me writing about them and being fannish now that I’ve found them, I just feel sad that once again I’ve missed the boat on being into something with more than a handful of people around who even care. All my ’ships these days are either super-obscure or long dead. I don’t know if it’s just my tastes being weird or if I actively avoid popular fandoms and justify it by saying I simply don’t see their appeal.

Because I miss having lots of fic to read on a regular basis. But I don’t miss the wank and nonsense that goes along with basically every big fandom. Hype turns me off and yet I also hate feeling so lonely in my fannish loves.

What's the show/ship? Feel this way hardcore about Frank & Tim from Homicide, btw.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-25 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'd name it but it would be pretty much immediately outing myself if anyone went looking...I'm the only one to have posted any fic for the ship on the big archives in over a year.

That said, it's not too distantly related to Homicide, actually...

I feel like something from SVU? ... Trying to think of NY cop shows...

But yeah, I just browsed around the other day, and that fandom seems craycray.

That sucks, yeah. You can still ship it but lack of feedback in fandom is frustrating.

Yeah, there's always a certain amount of loneliness in discovering a long-dead fandom, as I have discovered quite recently. I feel you, OP.

ugh. i feel you. my current ship has A LOT of canon backing and an interesting dynamic, but the juggernaut ship also has a lot of canon backing and the dudes in it and the dynamic are more popular. so, here's me with my fandom otp, and, while everyone is like "oh, yeah, I like that ship," no one ships it enough to really be fannish about it like I want to be. This is like the third dead fandom/ship this year. And I've only really been in three fandoms this year. :(

At least my Fallout 4 faves are shaping up to be popular.

Who are your Fallout 4 faves? (Out of curiosity, I haven't played yet but I've saw some gifs and things.)

AYRT

Mild Character spoilers but you may already know them

Well, I've only travelled with Dogmeat, Preston Garvey, Nick Valentine and Hancock. Dogmeat is a given. He's great. Preston is cute, but he's totally judgey about my junk collecting and doesn't even try to hide his judging with sarcasm like Nick and Hancock. It got on my last nerve and I dropped him for Nick ASAP. Plus he's just too... goody-two-shoes. Nick and Hancock are both good-hearted as welI, but I felt like I could be a little less nice with them around. I loved Nick so much I finished out his quest even though it was a bit hard in some spots. Now I'm traveling with Hancock and trying to trigger his quest. I might love him more than Nick just because he's got that "love at first sight" advantage. He stabbed a dude for bothering me before he even introduced himself. How sweet was that!? I'm gonna romance the hell out of him. (I'm going to romance every one I can, but he's gonna be my first.)

Haha, in the Fallout verse that's pretty damn amazing. (Especially because most people always want a favor, but rarely do they do anything in return!) Also, what a good story to tell other people about how you met.

From what admittedly little I've seen Hancock seems like a fantastic character and a sweet LI! I watched his romance scenes and went, "Fuck, I need to play this game..." I really dig his design too and feel like he would be enjoyable to have around. I've seen some adorable fanart of him.

And Nick Valentine looks equally as fun a companion (I know a lot of people are disappointed you can't romance him); I saw an absolutely hilarious gifset with him and in some of the dialogue posts I've seen around he always seems to have something hilarious or weirdly flattering to say.

Garvey I'm not as familiar with, but I still liked what I saw of his romance and he seems pretty cool!

That's an unsatisfying situation to be in. TBH, if I get into fandom only to discover my ships aren't popular, I'm probably not going to be terribly interested or involved in the fandom; so much of fandom revolves around shipping now (which I'm not saying is a bad thing, I obsess over it too!) that there isn't exactly a lot of genfic to dig through if I'm not into the main pairings.

This could be good, though! If you write for the pairing there will be something there for old fans to read if/when they come back. (Or new fans of the pairing like you, who might be drawn in later.) That, or if you advertise it maybe it'll reach some people who might have an interest in it? (But wouldn't otherwise go looking for it.)

Anyway, yea, it's tough being excited and enthusiastic about something then having no one to discuss it with. (Maybe start a thread in GC one day, see if anyone shares your love.)

I understand where you're coming from. I gave my heart away to a small, closed fandom and I'm the only person I know of who ships my particular ship. It's a lonely place to be :-(

(Anonymous) 2015-11-25 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I hear ya! I am still in love with my old, old fandom. I love that there is no drama and wank. I still write stories for it, but I have to admit, I feel a bit weird about posting them, because there's so little traffic, it feels like there will be too much of a spotlight on me and I'm spotlight-averse. So it's a conundrum.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-25 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I've felt like this in the past about other ships. It's kind of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, no one cares enough about your ship for the crazy wank to start. On the other hand, no one cares enough about your ship :/

Olivia/Eliot from SVU?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-25 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, from what I've seen on FF.net that ship's pretty popular. But maybe that site's an anomaly, too, in that regard, who knows? I haven't really delved much into the "SVU" fandom.
