You know what? I'm reasonably sure that more people would write and ship black characters if everything about them wasn't so likely to set off the 'YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG CROWD!'. I know of plenty of writers who are scared witless to write minority characters. The irony, of course, is they are generally the same people who moan about lack of representation.

As for PSYCH, I couldn't ship Gus and Shawn because it's feel incestuous, and that's not my thing. But then again, I didn't really find anyone shippable. Not even Shawn and Juliet, and the were dating in RL. ::shrugs::

I don't think that seems too common anymore. Maybe on Tumblr people are more hypercritical?

Dunno. I do know that about three years ago I was involved in a group writing project and the same people who said we needed OCs of various other racial make up other than white became very reticent to write those new characters once they were developed.

I don't think it's really a problem? I haven't seen anybody criticizing people who write Sam/Steve or Tony/Rhodey in Marvel fandom for doing it wrong, you know?

And Shawn/Gus doesn't really...contain any complex cultural difference stuff, really. They grew up together. I think there's a potential to step in it if you focus on race issues clumsily and out of the blue instead of writing your standard slash romance/casefic, I guess.

I see people criticizing Sam/Steve for turning Sam into Steve's own personal psychiatrist and fountain of endless support and reassurance and care, while ignoring that Sam is also a soldier with his own issues to explore who could use some support from Steve sometimes. I am not really in fandom so I don't know how legit the criticism is.

I don't think so. People write what they want to write. They just don't want to write it as much as they want to pay lip service that they do.

I know I personally ship a LOT of mixed couples and the reason I don't write them is because fandom SJWs have scared me shitless of getting POCs wrong. I was around for RaceFail. I would rather just not do it than mess up and get attacked.

LOL, racefail. That was fucking ODD. "You made Ronon a BARISTA????? RACIST!" Strange, strange, strange.

+1 Me too. Maybe things have changed since then, but at the time, so many people got massively dogpiled for 'not doing it right'. I write fic because I enjoy it. Stressing over whether or not I'm going to get blacklisted for some mistake sucks all the fun out of fic writing, so I just don't go there.

I've written mixed couples (and POC/POC couples) a lot, and I've gotten an entirely positive response to my fics. I'd say, as long as you don't praise your own fic publicly as the definitive word in anti-racist fanfic, you should be just fine.

Errr...Psych fandom was like wayyy before the huge boom of overzealous social justice. And this explanation falls super flat in terms of Gus because there is nothing "stereotypically black" about him that could be construed as problematic if white writers went off the deep end of badfic falls for him. He's a motivated, middle class guy with goals in life and a steady job, he doesn't speak in AAVE so white writers aren't going to try to sound out the accent in fic and come off as super clueless at best, racist at worst ("yooooo wassup mah dawgs, ah am just a regolurrr black dood, ya diggit mah hohmieees?").

I have honestly never seen anyone pick on white writers writing interracial romance(especially if it's a ship thing and not original fiction) to be quite honest. That feels more like a straw man people will use to justify their casual racism and why they don't ship black characters EVER. I'm not calling you out, I just want to point that out, that every time I see this as an excuse by someone it's someone who has at some point tried to defend their "lack of attraction to black people" (and it's always black people lol people will ship the ever lovin' fuck out of a middle eastern man and a white man, a latino man and a white man, [insert the rest of the races here]) and then they kinda settle on this to "defend" it.
