Yeah, I pretty much think you're entirely right, but it's also a battle I've mostly given up fighting, because it just feels like no one is ever going to change their minds and will just continue to come up with justifications, no matter how weak.

If fandom tends to ship white guys, and it often humanizes nonhumans as black, does one ever negate the other? Take Papyrus from Undertale, who's often humanized as black--does he ever get shipped in that form?

These secrets just make me glad I stuck to the show itself and didn't venture into the fandom. I saw enough of it around, sure, but part of the reason I never got involved was because of things like this. I have never ever understood the appeal of Shawn/Lassiter, or Shawn/Juliet (even though I thought the actors themselves made for a cute pair - actors =/= characters). So when that was just about all the fandom had to offer or squee over, it just left me kind of bored and even a little irritated.

Yeah, this always bugged me, too, particularly with this show. When I first started watching it I went looking, expecting the fandom to be huge because they were so cute together. And then there was nothing.

I vaguely ship Shawn/Gus and I don't feel Shawn/Lassiter but I think that reducing it to racial preference is pretty shortsighted. People like a lot of adversarial relationships so I don't think it's necessarily an issue of racial preference in this case so much as it might be a ship style preference. Still, I know what you mean because I've felt that way myself many times before.

I was never in the fandom and didn't ship anything from the show, but for slash I like rivalry ships much more than "BFF who grew up together" ships. Unfortunately, when there's a black guy to pair with a white guy, the two usually fall into the latter category. And ironically, I think it's because writers of canon think it would make them look racist to have black and white characters be rivals.

You know what? I'm reasonably sure that more people would write and ship black characters if everything about them wasn't so likely to set off the 'YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG CROWD!'. I know of plenty of writers who are scared witless to write minority characters. The irony, of course, is they are generally the same people who moan about lack of representation.

As for PSYCH, I couldn't ship Gus and Shawn because it's feel incestuous, and that's not my thing. But then again, I didn't really find anyone shippable. Not even Shawn and Juliet, and the were dating in RL. ::shrugs::

I've never watched Psyche, so I can't speak to the chemistry between the characters (and am in no way denying the probable racism because I well know of fandom's hard on for two white dudes), but quite often shipping two best friends doesn't have quite the same...zing of shipping two people who start off at odds. If that makes sense. And age difference can add that too. Maybe I just have a crush on Timothy Omudson.

And maybe I should watch this show before I make comments on it. Whoops.

I couldn't really get behind a lot of shipping for this show. To start, I just wasn't interested. Bit bored by Juliet/Shawn, and couldn't see the brotherly relationship between Shawn and Gus as more. I did love the dynamic with Lassie and wanted more, but not really sexual, I guess?

I feel like if there was/is a lot of Gun/Shawn it could be problematic in its own way, but I'm sorry it's not there and such a gaping hole, especially the OOC stuff. :/

The fans I knew IRL (never really knew many internet fans), all pretty much loved Gus and tolerated Shawn, though. :-)

Something about Lassiter's level of paranoia and twitchiness appeals to me. I would've liked to see more done with the character, I guess.

Also, I cannot and never have been able to believe that a man as wonderful as Gus had a hard time finding a girl who liked and wanted to date him. He had so many wonderful qualities! His geekiness, hot body, kindness, intelligence, and enthusiasm all worked in his favor, and it's so hard to believe anyone would look at Shawn if they could have a Gus in their life!

Haha, sorry, had to get that rant out there. Gus is just awesome!

I hate to tell you this, but some people just won't ship the besties. Not ever, no matter what they look like. While I'm sure it would've been a more popular pairing if Gus had been white, I still think it would've have been the juggernaut.

I feel like you're drawing the wrong conclusion here. Shawn/Lannister was popular, yes, but people who like rival ships weren't going to go for the best friend ship anyway, regardless of race. The people who might've potentially shipped Shawn/Gus, though, could've been put off for other reasons. I'm normally a fan of friend ships, but I didn't ship Shawn/Gus because I hated Shawn, and I doubt I'm the only one who--while normally a shipper--didn't ship anything in Psyche for that reason.

For me, I'm tired of this whole debate. We've had it several times here, and it's the same arguments over and over. I've mentioned how Gus/Shawn's friendship didn't appeal the way that Shawn/Lassiter's rivalry did (and they're not even my first OTP on this show). I have lots of black/white slash ships. None of them are friendships like Gus and Shawn because that's not interesting to me. I have lots of ships with POC characters. But not shipping this one makes me racist.

I feel the same way about the MCU, Iron Man in particular. I absolutely love Tony/Rhodey but everything's fucking Stony or Science Bros.

I shipped Shawn/Gus but I didn't watch over 5 episodes so...

Can't add much to the discussion, but I'm sure some people genuinely do like the antagonistic relationship more than the best friend one. Not everyone, but some.

I think the issue isn't actually that the same people who ship best friend pairings ship the adversarial pairing because the best friend is black, but rather that best friend shippers stayed away and didn't write because the best friend is black

I watched Psych. Shawn and Gus were like an old married couple. There's not much fun in shipping that.

Plus, I don't agree it's racism, it's lookism. Gus is kind of goofy looking. If he'd have been played by, say, Michael Ealy (who is hot), I'm sure the shipping would have been intense.
