UGH YEAH

Gus was the best, too, oh man. He was sweet, and he was smart, and he was responsible but he still let himself be pulled into things because being with Shawn was FUN for him, too, even when he was worried about it or 'knew better'... they were so perfect together, and I did not get the whole 'Shassie' phenomena at ALL, and... like, eventually I wound up getting turned off of the show itself...

sigh

Yesssssss thank you.

I think secret OP is my spirit animal or something because tbf I was stewing after a little mini bitchfest broke out in that last secret that mentioned it and people were pulling the same all "STAWP CLAIMING EVERYTHING IS ABOUT RACE" bs when I think it's extremely fuckin' obvious it's about race. Like for fuck's sake. People keep trying to justify it with "it's not race it's because lots of slash/yaoi fandoms don't ship the besties!" but that's total bullcrap. Makoto/Haru from Free! completely TOOK OVER tumblr and has kinda dominated tumblr (and continues to dominate with a new movie or something coming out with them as younger kids and no Rin or something? I don't know I didn't follow.) Like Makoto and Haru are literally the definition of childhood best friends who are extremly dependent on one another and as "as close as family" and people lapped that couple up like it was fandom heroin. Like I wish we were at a mature enough place in fandom where you can say:

"Yes, I do think racial biases play a large part in fandom. This happens over and over again with men of colour, particularly black men, and this isn't right." Like I don't know why people seem to think racism is abolished and we don't still have implicit biases and subtle racism that goes on every day in everything from media to marketing to government, and yes, in fandom too.

If Gus were white people would have eaten his friendship with Shawn UP. There was enough subtext in that show to create a manifesto.

nayrt

I'm not in Psych fandom - don't think it even aired in my country - and OP sounds like their saltiness is well-founded. I'm sorry they have to deal with that. But having read through every comment out of genuine interest, I would say that it doesn't sound like Mako/Haru isn't necessarily an equivalent 'best bros' ship - there's a lot of tension between them, and they're supposed to be getting less close, and in S2 at least one is talking about moving away from their home town. Also, shipping them even though Haru is in a familial position with him plays into Mako's neuroses, and he's not always an easy character to pin down, so it can add intrigue to a character who's in the focus a lot, but is rarely open about his feelings.

People comparing the ship to Harry/Ron sounded like they might be more on the money. Like, sure the guy's always there, and I'd go to battle for him, or give him a kidney or whatever, but it's not even a case of working out our shit years ago, there was just never any shit. Which is why the Marauders, who are childhood friends in a similar way, are massively shipped, even at school age - they had radically different personalities and upbringings, and even though we don't see a lot of them together at that age, their scenes are compelling and left fans wanting more. Meanwhile over in Brooklyn 99 fandom I've just finished watching the first series, and I absolutely cannot imagine shipping Jake/Gina. They have zero chemistry and at first I didn't even buy that they were childhood friends, as the plot point wasn't initially mentioned. They wouldn't be very good for each other, but nor would their relationship be arrestingly unhealthy. I mean, the writers are great, and they could probably keep me watching even then, but it's definitely not something I'd be looking up otherwise. But in Community, Troy/Abed - two POC characters - are dripping in chemistry, and have extremely different ways of thinking which make their friendship seem kind of unlikely and a victory. And even though I can't really think of a time they've come into conflict, I ship those two young BFFs like burning.

tl;dr I don't doubt that Psych fandom can be depressingly racist, but I do think that there are childhood friends ships and childhood friends ships.
