It's bad writing and directing too. Renner does play dour a lot, but the filmmakers seem to have completely discarded comic!Clint's personality.

So I think Renner's being directed to act that way.

Yeah, and I don't know why. I mean, they changes other things, bt they seem to make sense and work for the characters...this is just, inferior to comic!clint in every way.

I'm not too thrilled about ScarJo as Widow, either, but ou can see that at least the makers tried to get it right and respect her past and her personality.

I'm curious what you don't like about her in the role? I do like movie Clint, at least in the scenes with his friendship with Natasha, but he is definitely a very different character. But I don't get that with Scarlett's portrayal.

It's really hard to explain. It's that when looking at her, I just often don't buy she's been through what she's supposed to have been through?

With Steve, Bucky, Bruce, and even Tony...even when the're composed, there's just thing world-weariness, you can see they have a history even if they're not actively doing a scene about that history.

I don't have that feeling with ScarJo. she just feels so "light". And yeah you can rationalize it by saying she's really good at what she does, but still.

I had moment in CA:TWS when it did work for me, but not at all times.

And even if you'd make the argument that maybe they don't direct women that well...well, I didn't have that with Wanda. MCU Wanda feel "younger" than the vibe I get from the comics, but she feels genuine to me.

Huh. It's interesting, because I feel the opposite - I found Wanda lacking weight.
Maybe it's really that I find them doing less good of a job directing the women in general, really... though I do really enjoy ScarJo as Black Widow, overall (though I hated what they did with her in AoU)

wow, i never really thought about it but now that you mention it... she is quite light on the role. and it would have been interesting to see someone more world-weary in the role
