Some potentially wanky fandom crap.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I know F!S hates it when some drive-by anon drops a link with zero context, but I’d really like to know what you guys think about something, because I myself have a ton of conflicting opinions and feelings about it. I would be interested in hearing other people’s opinions, as much to help sort out my own thoughts as for the sake of promoting discussion on this comm.

So, here’s a thing, which I somewhat agree with in some parts and strongly disagree with in others:
https://www.reddit.com/r/nightvale/comments/3ubepr/spoilers_my_issue_with_the_novel/

And here’s the response to the thing, which strikes me as kind of weird and unprofessional, but maybe I’m overreacting:

Yeah, regardless of the correctness or incorrectness of the original post, that is an unprofessional response.

Both things can be wrong.

That's what I thought...

When you look for advice about becoming a published author, one of the things that gets drilled into your head is "Don't respond to reviews, especially negative reviews, it makes YOU look bad." People like Anne Rice and Laurel K. Hamilton are held up as examples of how NOT to deal with the critics.

This incident, to me, is reminiscent of the sort of outbursts Rice would have when she got a 1-star rating on Amazon or whatever.

I wonder if agents shouldn't include a spiel about social media in their contracts? Because while I hate to be the "everyone turns evil online" person, since I think that tends to be exaggerated, I DO think that people react impulsively and forget that what happens online will impact how people see you in the "real" world. Unless of course you're anonymous, but a writer won't be, and I get that. But then watch what you say. You know? It really shouldn't be rocket science.

I know sometimes what I do is type up what I want to say, then wait until the anger cools off. Then I go back and decide whether or not it's really a good idea to post. 9/10? Nope. Not a good idea.

I am so glad I stopped listening to that show. The creators can be such asses. And honestly, I went back to listen to my favorite episodes and I just found the show to not be as good as I remembered (I think I am listening to better podcasts/audiobooks these days). Which made me a bit sad because I really used to like A Story About You. :(

I'm definitely more a fan of the earlier episodes as well. They felt more like an actual news radio show. I stopped listening when the StrexCorp plot completely took over.

I had no idea the creators were like this until somebody linked to that tweet on tumblr. It's disappointing, but at times like this I'm very glad I'm capable of enjoying art as separate from the people who make it.

That is the exact same time I stopped listening!

...That's how tween fanfic writers respond to criticism, not professionals. Yikes.

Thank you for actually linking to the post in question though, I hadn't seen it since all that was going around Tumblr was Fink's tweet.

You're welcome.

The post itself is far from a shining exemplar of brilliant literary criticism (and as I said, I strongly disagree with much of it), but I do wish people would actually bother to read it before forming an opinion based solely on a tweet made in response to it.

Yeah, no, the post itself has its own problems, but I'm glad I got a chance to read it. Because while the original reviewer does have some valid issues, he (assuming they're male based on their complaint centering around lack of representation for straight males in particular) cloaks it in a lot of whining, and that just makes it kind of sad to look at.

Fink acting like that makes me a different kind of sad.

The issue is that you don't take the time to summarise what you're linking to. Not even a one liner.

Either give us context or fuck off.

I think with some things it is best to let people check it out for themselves and draw their own conclusions.

Re: Some potentially wanky fandom crap.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Or, you can give us some context. All I can get about the html is that it is about a novel.

It won't hurt you to give one line as to the content of the link. It's not about letting people drawing their conclusions, it's about saying what's in the link to garner interest.

Until then, fuck off.

You sure are angry about someone not making something interesting enough for you.

Re: Some potentially wanky fandom crap.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
would you like some cheese with that whine?

Re: Some potentially wanky fandom crap.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I should think a link to the whole thread is plenty of context.

What you seem to want is cliff notes.

Re: Some potentially wanky fandom crap.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
No, I want anon to stop being a lazy fuck and give us a line or two about what the link is about. Even a general theme.

Until then, no viewing of link and no opinion because the topic could range anywhere from the ideal position of fucking tomatoes to someones beginning career in snail breeding.

What bad things will happen to you if you visit a link without knowing what it is?

Keep in mind someone could lie to you about what a link is, so "it could be a virus or NSFW or something I'm not interested in" doesn't count.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Just a single line about what fandom it is would be useful. If it's something I'm into, I can click the link. If not, I can pass it by. I shouldn't have to click the link to find out whether I'd actually be interested.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
if you'd actually bothered to look at the links, you'd notice that one has nightvale and novel right there in the url.

you're just looking fr something to bitch about.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-11-28 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, my bad, I didn't notice that particular character string at the beginning of the URL; I expected relevant info at the end and just glanced at the rest.

My point stands though. How much more effort would it have been to just put "Nightvale novel wank" or "Authors behaving badly" in the damn subject line rather than the vague-as-shit one that was used?
