Transcript: I adore this series, but I don't own any of the books because I HATE the covers!!
They don't even match what the series is about and I'm disappointed that the next book will have the same kind of cover.

How is this series/what is it about? The covers don't look all that good, you're right, but I had to laugh because they reminded me immediately of a series I read by Tara Janzen:

I think the silhouette look on covers is so boring. :/

Holy effed up HTML, sorry. I guess just copypaste the link for anyone who wants to see it.

Lol That cover's hilarious. XD

The series is about a girl who can communicate with ghosts and she helps many of them go to the afterlife, sometimes by kicking their butts. There's a weird romance angle with a ghost and some supernatural elements, but it's a fun series. I just really hate those type of clip art-y covers.

Holy mackerel, what is that cover?! It's somehow both boring and funny to me.

For the first four, these are actually the second printing covers, when Meg Cabot put her own name on the series instead of her pseudonym. I don't think the old covers had people at all

wait, there's going to be another book?? I thought the series ended years ago. Suze/Jesse was one of my first ships, so I'm kind of excited

sa

I agree that the covers are weird btw (but, tbf, I think a lot of YA series have really stupid covers. alas). I think the UK publication of the series had slightly better covers (http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120403073255/themediator/images/thumb/4/4b/The_mediator_covers.JPG/500px-The_mediator_covers.JPG). I still don't know why the has to be facing the audience in every single one but whatever.

Both sets of covers remind me of the illustrations that would be in YM Magazine. Anyone remember YM? It was like Seventeen and other teen-girl magazines. Anyway, the articles were often illustrated just like that. I'd expect there to be a tampon ad on the facing page.

Yep. Bought a couple of copies for reading material while on a family trip. That's when I first discovered Tiffani Amber Thessien.

Aw, I loved YM. :)

A friend got me a subscription to YM from 2001-2, when I was 12-13. And my middle school would get rid of old periodicals before every summer break, so I got more older issue of YM and Seventeen and Teen Vogue too.

I still have a bunch of issues in a box in the garage. Definitely know one of them is the YM LOTR issue. The subscriber copy has Elijah Wood on the cover, and I remember being mad because the newsstand copy has Orlando Bloom on the cover and I liked him better.

YM stopped printing in 2004, so not long after. It ran for 72 years!

I actually sort of like the covers because they're colorful and the character has a 'Jessica Jones' look in a few of these, but after reading the synopsis for these books IA, they don't seem to fit.

(Before googling I thought these books had something to do with fashion.)

They're better then the photo covers that are on every YA book, but yeah, these covers always irked me too. I used to get wrapping paper when I was a kid to hide covers I didn't like. You could try that?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I haaaate photo covers. Most of them, anyway. I'm an aspiring author and it is my worst fear that a publisher will slap a generic pouty teenage model on the cover of my book :P

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
If that's your worst fear as an aspiring author, you're either really naive or not terribly creative.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Er... my worst fear as an aspiring is that my writing will appeal to no one and languish in oblivion forever. Or that I'll be published, but get horrible reviews from both readers and critics, get mocked by the internet, not earn out my advance and then no publishing house in their right mind will touch me with a ten foot pole.

Bad covers suck, but come on. Worst fear?

I love Meg Cabot books to death, but tbh almost all the covers to her books are hideous. They are so outdated and need to be redone.
