Dogs have some intrinsic value as workers and herders and hunters and retrievers.

Pandas have none.

Yup.

I agree that dogs are overrated, if only because dog stans tend to be so OTT and vocal about how great dogs are and how they love their dog more than anything and would die for their dog and they just know their dog would die for them and all of that.

I love most dogs but I do think those little tiny dogs that do nothing but go IPE IPE IPE and shake and piss are massively overrated.

Seriously. I am actually kinda sad about it, but like EVERY thing I read on the subject is pretty much going "SO, THESE PANDAS, THEY JUST DON'T SEEM TO WANT TO HAVE SEX. WE....WE'VE PRETTY MUCH TRIED EVERYTHING, BUT HAVING BABIES JUST IS NOT A PRIORITY FOR THEM AT ALL."

Yeah, one would wish they would have dedicated that much interest in white rhinos, but no, they just want to kill rhinos for a bullshit "medicine" and pour all their conservation money into pandas.

Anybody else having a Fight Club moment here?

most mammals, especially the cute ones

they have shitty survival skills, they're super fragile, they overspecialized at some point of their evolution and their diet is impossible to maintain, and they're not even that useful for their own ecosystem... really the only reason so much money is wasted on conservation efforts (money that could go to animals that are actually vital for the survival of their environment) is that they're chubby and cute.

I hate those stupid things

All the hype about pandas frustrates because this is not a species that we need to save. This is a species that nature is trying to kill because it's become useless.

Like pandas clearly want to just die. They won't mate. Hello guys, that's a sign.

There are way cooler animals, so I don't get why wolves are held up as "TEH COOLEST" and wolf symbolism is ALWAYS shorthand for "THIS IS REALLY COOL OMG".

Pandas definitely win, because the are the animal we spend the most money trying to save that just does nothing to save itself. It's a failure of an animal, it really is - the bamboo diet is awful, not only extremely picky (they don't NEED to only eat bamboo, they CHOOSE to) - and actually, two kinds of bamboo - but bamboo isn't even good for them. Their cute faces? Are deformed because of so much lack of proper nutrients from a normal diet. They hardly ever have babies.

Now, I'm not saying let them go extinct but there are so many more deserving animals. And at least other superstar endangered species like tigers are perfectly capable, it's just a matter of not having enough habitat.

Also: dogs. No, not all dogs, but most breeds that are basically awful mutations manipulated by humans purely for aesthetic. Ugly little shits like chihuahuas and pugs - the latter of which who actually have loads of respiratory problems thanks to breeding cruelty. Frankly, I'd ban the breeding of dogs like that if I could.
