Do this do that be perfect in every sense if not you are a FAILURE
(Anonymous) 2015-12-03 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)It was originally entitled 'bucking the slacker student trend'. FUCK YOU BBC. I worked damn hard to get through University and hardly went out with my friends, and now you're making me feel bad that I didn't also work part time, run my own company and ski as a hobby.
This attitude seems to be omnipresent in every aspect of modern day life. Be the perfect parent with a perfect job, raising perfect kids, have the perfect body, hair, sense of style. Hell, even if you're ill then that's okay - so long as you bounce back and magically fix everything in your life to the point where you can become a feel good article on buzzfeed.
Anyone else getting annoyed with it?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-04 12:15 am (UTC)(link)I was able to go part time and work. But you know what? I'm not smug about it. What worked for me doesn't work for everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-04 02:45 am (UTC)(link)Me too. I'm aware I take things personally sometimes even when people can say "they don't mean you, you're not the worst!", but the feeling persists.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-04 12:44 am (UTC)(link)Plus, as you said, you worked hard in college, so what makes you think "the slacker student trend" refers to you? Maybe it's about those people who drag through school in 6 years or more, miss any class that meets before 11 a.m., feel entitled to have a good time in school, never think about the issues of the day, spend Thursday through Sunday partying or sleeping it off, wear blackface on Halloween, and still think they deserve at least a B just for sucking up air and taking up space.
Re: Do this do that be perfect in every sense if not you are a FAILURE
(Anonymous) 2015-12-04 04:34 am (UTC)(link)However, I will say that while I think what these kids are doing is impressive, I get a bit tired of people acting like being an entrepreneur is the ideal way to be and something everyone should be aiming for. There's nothing wrong with studying to become a teacher and then getting a job at a school, or becoming a doctor and getting a job at a hospital. People who do that aren't being crushed under the heel of The Man. Many jobs benefit from a bunch of people coming to work together as a group, both for reasons of logistics and efficiency, and because it fosters collaboration. I could theoretically do my job as an independent contractor but I think I do better work as part of a team because we collaborate and support each other and check each other's work. Besides, running your own business means being a business person as much as anything else and not everyone wants to be a business person. I don't envy the people who run the company I work for because while they started in the same field as me, they had to give up the fun stuff and go spend their days dealing with contracts and payroll.
