Sexualities aren't about having sex at all times. Straight people and gay people can refrain from having sex without having to label themselves as asexual.

That's how I see it, but I've unfortunately had conversations (online) with people who claim that it's basically all about sex and you can't call yourself straight (or gay) if you're not into sex.

Well, much like how you, a straight person, don't have the power to tell an asexual person that they're really just straight or gay, they also can't tell you that you're asexual. That's for you to decide, and while "straight" gets a bad rap, there's nothing wrong with it, so feel free to stand up for yourself.

Also, not talking to those people, as the other anon suggested, is a very good piece of advice. It might save you a lot of grief. People who can't accept what you are aren't worth your time.
