So obviously I've seen this term bandied about a lot online, but what exactly does it mean? Why do some people think that being an SJW is good and some think it's bad? I always thought it meant being politically correct, but perhaps it's more extreme than that? I don't really know. I've always been too afraid to ask.

Feeling that it's your personal duty to strive for social justice is a good thing. The trouble is the people who think a good cause justifies any amount of bad behavior, and that anyone who calls you on it is ~derailing.

If patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel, I think it's fair to say that wrapping yourself in the mantle of social justice is the last resort for a bully.

I use it to mean "moralistic person who uses social justice as a mean to attack others," but the terms been so diluted it's really "something something tumblr something something social justice."

It is what it sounds like, basically: a warrior for social justice. They're the people who take it upon themselves to police the internet and rain down hellfire upon those who dare to commit such heinous acts as:

- using "crazy" to describe any unusual event (that's ableist)
- letting your kid dress up as Pocahontas for Halloween (cultural appropriation)
- saying anything good about a cis male person (misogynist)
- calling a person "him" or "her" (transsexist)
- getting a super dark spray tan (blackface is racist)

Also, they are the ones that make the people who are legitimately attempting to bring about social justice in the world look weird and dangerous. And the reason people don't take feminists seriously.

It's the warrior part that's key. The mentality that everything is a "war" and everything is black and white.

It's funny because they don't realize it's the same words that the conservatives they hate, use. War on Christmas. War on religion. War on whatever else. When they start seeing every kind of discourse as a war and every disagreement as an attack and people who think differently as enemies and The Bad Guys... both groups are thinking exactly like each other.

it's social justice warrior and I always took it to mean someone who attacks people online under the name of "social justice" and/or doesn't really understand the cause they are supposedly fighting for and doesn't let people from the affected group speak/shuts down everybody else's reasonable arguments

for me, I've had the same definition for longer than the specific term has been around. Someone who cares more about being seen fighting for something than the thing they are fighting for.
