I never leave reviews. All the begging in the world and reassurance that authors ALWAYS love when you review no matter what even if it's just an "I love this!" will make me believe they're not going to be annoyed or secondhand embarrassed by whatever I have to say. I always feel stupid reading my own reviews when I try to write them, so why would the author feel different?

Because it's really nice to know that a story is enjoyed. Yours might be the comment that keeps a writer inspired enough to keep on keeping on.

You know why an author would feel different about it?

Because sometimes we wanna know what we did right. Sometimes we wanna know what we did wrong. Sometimes we want to know, just like anyone else, that we're loved. Or at least that we're not worthless and ignored.

I feel the same way all the time and I tend to leave off-topic tl;dr reviews that authors never reply to. But once -- just once -- I was the only reviewer for this 200,000+ word long fic and the author seemed really grateful and thanked me for the feedback in their last chapter so... IDK if you're not super well-known (or don't have an image to maintain) then go for it! If they hate it, they can always delete it and (assuming you really like the work), the chance to TALK to the creator is always really nice for me. :)

I always leave long reviews on fics, and the writers thus far have responded very positively (which is great, because I worry that I'll be rambling or babbling and they'll want me to shut up :p). They actually seem a little shocked that someone would take the time to type out such a lengthy review, 'cause it's just not that common a thing.

And it's definitely led to some awesome conversations between myself and the author sometimes as well, which is really nice and fun.

I can understand people feeling awkward about leaving reviews for various reasons, and if people don't want to review for whatever reason, that's their decision. I'll never pressure them. But speaking as a writer, I will always love it when people do comment on something I wrote. I love reading their thoughts, and since writing is a passion of mine, it's just great to get that feedback that can both be encouraging and help me continue to improve.

Do you honestly think that every writer feels the same way you do? That seems a little... well, egocentric. I know a lot of fanfic authors, and every single one of them enjoys getting a review. Even the short ones, because that means that SOMEONE is reading. Otherwise they post a story, hear nothing back and wonder if they screwed up.

The authors who might feel annoyed or embarrassed by a review are in a very, very small minority. Basing your behavior off them doesn't make any sense at all, because if you read and don't review, the odds are you're annoying far more writers than you are now.
