Short thriller and inspirational novels

My friends have told me they don't like reading. I am properly horrified and since 'tis the season of Christmas sales, I thought I'd buy some books for them in the hopes of changing their minds.

One likes those thrilling action movies like Taken, so something along those lines, especially with unusual or attention-grabbing first lines to make her go on reading.

Another likes inspiring stories, particularly those rooted in real life, or at least are realistic.

They both seldom read and English is their second language, so I'd like to get them started on shorter novels. I think the style of middle-grade books with simple words and to-the-point sentences would be appropriate, but anything that would interest even a casual reader very quickly would be great!

And as for myself, I'm looking for fic recs for Phoenix/Edgeworth (less than 10k words, no PWPs, preferably fics about them starting a relationship but I'll take anything interesting), and both fic recs and prompts (from the kink meme or otherwise) for Phoenix/Franziska.

One of the most readable action-packed fun books that I've read was Ice Station by Matthew Reilly. I haven't watched Taken, but this book is fast, and fun. From what I recall, it's not a particularly difficult book, either.

As for inspirational, I don't know if this would qualify because it's about Jews, but Chaim Walder has a series called "Kids Speak", which is basically true stories by children about events in their lives that were sent to him as letters, and which he did some editing on for readability. Many of them have an educational/inspirational focus, and they're very sweet.
There's also a series for adults by him called People Speak, which is same idea but by adults.

Seconding Matthew Reilly for thrillers, with one important caveat. The series I read from him was Seven Deadly Wonders and its sequels, which are very actiony and easy to read. They also portray every villain as a blatant stereotype of whatever country they come from, even if a non-stereotypical hero comes from the same country. The central villain of the first book is an American stereotype, but the overall series villains are Japanese stereotypes, so I'd recommend against it if your friend is of Japanese descent.

(BTW, Reilly mentioned in the notes for Seven Deadly Wonders that the Ice Station villains were British, so I expect that might be an easier sell.)

My father also mentioned someone called Steve Berry, though I don't know much about them.

Nothing comes to mind for the book recs, sorry.
