Eh. I think they should be able to tag as many major characters as there are and genre tags. Sometimes a fic is funny AND angsty. But choosing one or the other can make readers miss out on a story.

I do wish there was a standard cross over tag (or opt out system).

Writer: Oh no I'm worried I might have a reader miss out on my work!!

Reader: GOD DAMN THIS SHIT! I can't find what I want through this mess of over tagging! That is it, I'm going to FF.net instead.

My point is that, you know. A lot of people use AO3. I don't think it's a good idea to cripple its functionality because of this one very specific experience.

Also there's a weird dynamic going on in anon's arguments about writers being arrogant or something, and how that's totally wrong, that's really bothering me. How DARE writers want people to read their work, or something. Like, they seem kind of weirdly angry about it.

Well writers should want people to read their work. However, they should want people to read it for what it honestly and truly is. They should not want to people to read it because they were suckered in by a misleading description, or because of the presumption that they'll enjoy it is they start even if it wasn't what they were searching for. That is the attitude that ends up ruining things for everyone.

I don't think all of the tag spam on AO3 is because writers are intentionally lying for the purposes of self-promotion.

I think that is, frankly, ridiculous.

How would limiting the number of tags prevent writers from misrepresenting their works? All they'd have to do is tag the wrong genre, characters, ships, and warnings, and write up a bullshit description.
