Re: AO3 Tagging

Why do the AO3 mods not fix it? It is a simple fix, limit the characters to three main characters, give one tag for genre, set one tag each for crossover, and make the uploader choose from a set list of warnings.

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-07 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck yeah, this so much. There is no need for the wall of spam tags. They should give all previous authors a month to comply or their fic gets wiped from the site too.

I'd also appreciate the kink tags being kept. I use them, and sometimes I'm looking for a specific kink and don't care the fandom or ships.

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
They can choose the kink as their genre tag then. Make the uploader actually think what their own goddamn fic is about, prioritize, utilize thought and restraint. It might be good for them.

Uh-huh, trying to please everybody all the time is what got them into this mess.

Not every fic has a single kink, and kinks may be included that aren't the theme of the piece. People looking for kinks don't necessarily care if that is what the fic is about or not. I'm all for limiting tags, but I think you are going too far.

nope, fuck off, if i want to search for fics that are both fluffy and kinky i should be able to do that

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I do understand your frustration, but would you really impose that on novel-length works?

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
On them most of all. At least with a drabble you realize the wall of tags is a joke, but when it comes to a novel length fic with a wall of tag then you have idea whether this all happened in a single chapter written on a sugar-high or whether it is the main meat of the fic.

Eh. I think they should be able to tag as many major characters as there are and genre tags. Sometimes a fic is funny AND angsty. But choosing one or the other can make readers miss out on a story.

I do wish there was a standard cross over tag (or opt out system).

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Writer: Oh no I'm worried I might have a reader miss out on my work!!

Reader: GOD DAMN THIS SHIT! I can't find what I want through this mess of over tagging! That is it, I'm going to FF.net instead.

I've never had this trouble. Ever.

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I hate it when I look for a character/ship and every single character that appears in the fic is listed. Fuck that. There really should be a limit to just the main characters + ship(s).

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ideally you would have a way to determine how you're tagging the ship - designate some character tags as main characters or something - but I imagine that would be complex to program

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I wish there were a way for them to do this! Let people know what the main characters/ships are, but warn people who can't stand characters/ships even as side characters/ships away.

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
You need to have the content-based tags. Those are so, so, so, so, so infinitely useful.

I suppose that limiting it to a smaller number of characters & ships MIGHT be worth it but overall I think that is too restrictive.

Re: AO3 Tagging

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-12-08 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, content based tags help me find all kinds of fics I've been looking for. I love them and they are one of the things I miss on FF.net.

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think that OP honestly just literally wants the search functionality to be exactly FF.net's, and is incapable of recognizing any flaws or limitations with the FFnet approach.

Yup, pretty much. I'm often looking for very specific things.

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god a list of warnings would be magnificent. I don't know about the genre/character limit, though. Lots of things are more than one genre, and plenty of fandoms have ensemble casts who get lots of screentime in any given fic.

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
They'd need to work on their exclusionary search first. FF.net has come unstuck on this by allowing dual genre tagging but only allowing exclusion of one genre. You try and filter out the Romance, but the romance writers get around that by tagging their romances as romance-hurt/comfort so you can never be free of them.

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think that'd be too restrictive, but it'd be great to have:
-A field for main characters/ships with a reasonable limit.
-A field for secondary characters/ships.
-And a free tag field that doesn't have limits, but that only has pre-approved genre/content-based/warning tags (with an easy way to suggest new ones, obvs)
