AO3 Tagging

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-07 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do the AO3 mods not fix it? It is a simple fix, limit the characters to three main characters, give one tag for genre, set one tag each for crossover, and make the uploader choose from a set list of warnings.

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-07 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck yeah, this so much. There is no need for the wall of spam tags. They should give all previous authors a month to comply or their fic gets wiped from the site too.

I'd also appreciate the kink tags being kept. I use them, and sometimes I'm looking for a specific kink and don't care the fandom or ships.

Eh. I think they should be able to tag as many major characters as there are and genre tags. Sometimes a fic is funny AND angsty. But choosing one or the other can make readers miss out on a story.

I do wish there was a standard cross over tag (or opt out system).

Agreed. I hate it when I look for a character/ship and every single character that appears in the fic is listed. Fuck that. There really should be a limit to just the main characters + ship(s).

You need to have the content-based tags. Those are so, so, so, so, so infinitely useful.

I suppose that limiting it to a smaller number of characters & ships MIGHT be worth it but overall I think that is too restrictive.

Oh god a list of warnings would be magnificent. I don't know about the genre/character limit, though. Lots of things are more than one genre, and plenty of fandoms have ensemble casts who get lots of screentime in any given fic.

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think that'd be too restrictive, but it'd be great to have:
-A field for main characters/ships with a reasonable limit.
-A field for secondary characters/ships.
-And a free tag field that doesn't have limits, but that only has pre-approved genre/content-based/warning tags (with an easy way to suggest new ones, obvs)

Question

(Anonymous) 2015-12-07 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
So I have a story about A talking to his family about history/law/some deep stuff. In the story I have B and C as well. They show up right at the beginning and right at the end, and A only looks at them but doesn't interact with them. It's heavily implied that A likes B and possibly C. It's also implied that B/C is a thing. But I also allude to C/D canonical relationship still going on.

How should I tag this? The story isn't about A/B/C necessarily but it's kind of an underlying theme. But I would also welcome it being read as A&B&C unrequited friendship.

Re: Question

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Tag for being about A. Let the reader draw their own inferences about the rest, there is no need to spell out the rest and you'll be cockteasing the people who are looking for fic where that is the text and not subtext.

Re: Question

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, if it's obvious enough for people to notice A's feelings, you could tag it as unrequited A/B/C, if you think people would want to avoid the pairing.

I hate tumblr style tags on AO3. I love them on Tumblr and always use a ton of them with humorous comments. But on AO3, the tags are designed for searching for fics. I only put ships, characters, and kinks in the tags.

Re: AO3 Tagging

I do too. "I wrote this drunk lol" is an author's note, not a tag.

I enjoy them when they come after the actually useful tags that I can use to find the fic. I don't have any logical reason for why they should be there, I just kinda like them.

TFW half the fic in your favourite character's tag is fig where she either features in a single scene, or is mentioned but never makes an actual appearance.

I wish people would just use the category tag (Gen, M/M, F/F, M/F, multi, other) for the main ships and not for every background pair. It is so hard sometimes to find what I'm looking for (for the most part het) because the tag is drowning in other things (for the most part slash) where the M/F is just background noise. It is also hard to find completely gen fic due to this.

1. One thing I like better about ff.net is that you can separate out the finished from the unfinished works; on AO3, you can only click that little thing that let's you read completed works. I wish there was a way to toggle between "all works", "completed works" and "in-progress works".

2. I want a "crossover" tag that's automatically added to any fanfic with more than one fandom, so that you can filter things out by -"crossover".

3. It is really annoying that you can't select a range of ratings, again, like on FF.net. Sometimes I want to read everything but the explicit works, but I can't sort it like that, and I hate it.

If you’re annoyed by excessive tags/”tumblr style tagging”, if you hover over the “hi, [name]” in the top right, and then click “My Preferences”, under “Display” you can choose to “Hide additional tags (you can still choose to show them).” as well as “Hide warnings (you can still choose to show them).“. I don’t have the warning one selected, but I can tell you, selecting the other one has made my AO3 experience a lot more pleasant.

Re: AO3 Tagging

I am writing a fic I consider to be gen, about a character who is married. The fic contains scenes of their relationship and they love each other, but the husband is very much in the background. Should I say it is gen or m/f?

I ask because I mostly like to read gen, but searching by the gen tag on AO3 is absolutely useless because people seem to put it on every fic that might have five words that aren't directly about the featured ship. It can be very frustrating.

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I really wish AO3 would implement some kind of "major character" "minor character" division in tagging, it would be so much easier to search for fics about characters I like if I didn't have to sift through a bunch of works where they appear for like half a scene but the author just had to tag them. (I also wish people wouldn't tag a character until they actually *appear in the damn fic* but that's not really AO3's fault. So sick of checking out multi-chapter fics with interesting premises tagged with my favorite character's name only to discover they don't actually appear at all in the handful of chapters the author has uploaded. And of course these are the fics that never get updated again so it just sits there, cluttering up my favorite character's tag even though they're not actually in the fic.)

Favoriting Authors! I want to be able to favorite fanfics so you have a database of them saved for you! Thats not tagging but...it needs to happen.

Re: AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
(strictly speaking they're not in relationships in this fic but I like to think that they are)

This is just lovely and it's a wonderful example of why tagging system so useful.
I mean, if I'm looking a ship's tag, of course I want to get non-shippy fics tagged as shippy because the author thinks the tags are the right place to make comments and list their favorite ships instead of, you know, indicate the main characters and ships that are in the fic, as well as other useful tags that are related to the story.
