Re: AO3 Tagging

I wish people would just use the category tag (Gen, M/M, F/F, M/F, multi, other) for the main ships and not for every background pair. It is so hard sometimes to find what I'm looking for (for the most part het) because the tag is drowning in other things (for the most part slash) where the M/F is just background noise. It is also hard to find completely gen fic due to this.

Oh, yeah, this is a huge pain in the ass.

It's at the point where, if I'm searching for femslash or gen or whatever, I mostly just filter out all m/m stuff. I'm sure that there's some fics that I'm missing out on where the m/m is in the background. But it's just such a pain in the ass paging through the millions of stories that are m/m with incidental f/f that I'm okay with that tradeoff.

Yeah, it is a problem. But I feel the authors, too, because I've had ppl complain about the inclusion of some ship they hated, even though it was in the background, because I didn't tag for it.

I feel like writers can't win with tags. Someone is always unsatisfied with how it's done.

I usually add minor pairings to the other tags rather than the relationship tag section.

Ooo, that's an idea I'll have to try, thanks.

That means people looking for main pairing results are going to be getting bogged down with your in-the-background-pairing tags getting thrown up though. If I want Janet and John as a pairing, then I'd rather not have to scroll through page after page of Malcolm and McDowell fics with Janet and John still tagged but as background. Please tag responsibly.

Idk because I've never posted anything on AO3, but as an author isn't it possible to just use the ship tags (e.g. main F/F-ship, very background M/M-ship) with having the category tag say both F/F and M/M, instead of just F/F? Because if all ships are included in the tags people shouldn't be too surprised/have no right to complain, even if the category doesn't reflect that both F/F and (very briefly) M/M ships appear.

It's not that it was m/m or f/f, it was that they hated that specific ship.

I agree. Although, I admit that I may have annoyed some people with how I tagged my last fic. It was a threesome fic. And there were no relationship tags for that threesome. So I tagged it with two containing pairings (Characters A and B were touching C with no touching between them so I didn't include that). I probably disappointed someone just looking for one of those ships, but I did make it clear in my general tagging and summary that this was a threesome fic.

Wouldn't you in that case create the A/B/C tag then? (Then again I'm not sure if there's a way to tag A/B/C where A&B don't touch or if it'd just be A/B/C no matter what...)

Yes! It is so hard to find Gen fic because of that stupid Multi category.
