I knew this would happen the second I learned Tennant was in that role. And you know, even though I'm not a fangirl... I sort of feel it? He is rather charming and likeable as a person. Tennant, I mean, not Kilgrave. It bleeds over into the role.

On. Tumblr, if you have any sort of sympathy for him you get dogpiled on.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-12-09 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, you mean tumblr does have one redeeming feature beyond cat gifs?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Not really sure that type of hive mentality is a positive quality, but you do you.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-12-09 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Having zero patience for rape apologia isn't a hive mind.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
No, but attacking anyone who likes a fictional character is.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
People keep saying this but I haven't seen it at all. It's more "Cool motive, still murder."

Same. I hang with Loki trash and it's pretty much 'yeah, no, they do terrible shit and Kilgrave is flat out the worst.'

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, everyone I've seen mention that the character is charismatic and interesting to watch has also said that he's fucking terrifying and a completely horrible person.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I just finished season 1 yesterday and have mostly been sticking to Jessica/Trisha fic. Maybe I'll brave the wilds of tumblr soon.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I know a lot of people feel sorry for Kilgrave or found him charming, but I didn't feel even an ounce of sympathy for him. I found him pretty gross. I guess I'm immune to David Tennant's charm.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I 100% do not understand sympathy for him, like hoooooly sheeeeet, what?

Yeah, I call this Handsome Jack Syndrome.

Jack's a friggin' mass murderer on top of being a megadouche. Still has his fans. I don't get it.

It goes way beyond Handsome Jack. I've heard even Pinhead has scary lustful fans.

I actually kind of get Pinhead, at least in the book and the first movie or two. There is the whole kink element and the fact that he isn't outright evil. He just doesn't understand that for humans there is a difference between pleasure and pain. Of course, as the movies go on he does become outright evil. But the quality goes down. He was always more interesting when he wasn't evil.

But then again, I vastly prefer the book where he doesn't betray the heroine at the end. He upholds their deal.

The tumblr fandom is a mixed bag (like fandom generally is), but if you're like me and mostly looking for gifs and art it's okay.

One of the few posts that made me say, "Why is this happening?" was a post where a user screen-capped someone else's post (the original posters name wasn't included) about wanting to hug Kilgrave, because "maybe if we all hugged him then he'd calm the fuck down". Sureeeeee he would. (That post wasn't a, "Totes agreed!", it was a "Wow, people are already treating Kilgrave like a woobie.") The second one that jumps to mind included a screen-cap of Kilgrave sprouting that line about consent (something like, "You have my word, I won't touch you without your consent") and added "Kilgrave gets it." Which...COMPLETELY MISSES THE POINT, but I resisted the urge to comment.

I've seen more "If you ship Jessica and Kilgrave gtfo" then I've seen people actually express interest in the pairing, though I know interest exists.

Frankly, as much as I loathe the ship (Though, again, I will point out that I don't dislike all 'problematic' ships, just this one), I don't think it's right to tell people they can't or shouldn't ship something. I certainly wouldn't want anyone to tell me I can't ship something for my own personal reasons; it's rude, pushy and pointless. (The only post like that I enjoyed had a gif of Gamora saying, "Your ship is filthy", and that was it. It made me chuckle.)

As for people adoring Kilgrave...it isn't my thing (and I do think some people might have a different response to Kilgrave if he wasn't played by David, but given that RL rapists can be handsome and look 'perfectly normal' too, I think it's good casting. Doubly so that his acting is so terrifyingly on point), but I've seen more hate then outright love. (Or people reluctantly admitting they love him then adding "I don't think he's justified in his actions.")

That's tumblr, though; don't go to reddit. I made that mistake a while back and saw a couple of people who actually said they were rooting for Kilgrave because Jessica was 'so annoying', or 'such a bitch,' or 'utterly unlikable'. That in addition to the people who 'totally sympathized' with Kilgrave or wanted his powers left me profoundly disturbed.

This is my experience atm as well, I'm not so into the fandom side of JJ except looking for gifsets and I might go hunting for some fic at some point but I've seen more people condemning anyone liking Kilgrave or Kilgrave/Jessica than people posting it. But I haven't gone into that tag so idk if people are being weird about it.

Honestly if the pairing is being written as completely fucked up I could see the appeal since fandom likes messed up things, though I don't know how I feel about the ship myself, this one might be just a bit much for me but at the same time if people dig it. Well alright.

I thought Kilgrave was a great villain but sympathy for the guy? Nope.

condemning anyone liking Kilgrave or Kilgrave/Jessica than people posting it

You know, I haven't seen much of that in other fandoms. Not recently. Like, it has to happen, but I don't run into it much; I feel like it's either becoming less common or I'm avoiding it more easily because of the size of the fandoms. I was actually kind of surprised to run into it in JJ because fandom loves their villains, but I think so many people have met someone like Kilgrave that he feels much more real (and skeevy) to them; it's harder to enjoy his brand of evil.

Still don't think you should be telling someone what they can or can't like, but I find this knee-jerk reaction a bit easier to understand then some.

I thought Kilgrave was a great villain but sympathy for the guy?

Though I agree with that; never in a million years, lol.

Yeah I figured people are reacting this way because Kilgrave, aside from being able to control minds, is the kind of villain you could meet any day, much like how Umbridge is hated so much in the HP fandom. They're both way more real than your Loki's or Hannibal's and for some people they could have a very good chance of bringing up something awful for them.

It's why I get some of the hostility towards people liking Kilgrave, but at the same time you can't tell people what to like, that and there is a huge difference between finding a character entertaining and condoning their actions(fandom has a problem with recognising this tho, on both ends).

Oh god no, I can't feel sorry for him at all, he was the ultimate spoiled child with a persecution complex a mile-wide and he deserved way more than a quick death(but I'll take it).

Wait, people are hating on Jessica on the offical facebook page? :( (Do you mean the whole, "Kilgrave is more likable then Jessica" thing?)

That's just sad. (I don't do facebook anyway, but...geez, guys.)

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I can see people shipping it because of the dirty-bad-wrong factor. In reality, though, the minority ship it that way. Instead they either fail to see the abuse aspects or they even become apologists for the abuser.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, but, to not talk about Kilgrave for a second: what the hell was up with those twins, though?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, MCU is the fandom that woobifies characters like Loki, Grant Ward and Brock Rumlow, so it doesn't really surprise me.
