I came home, opened the blinds AND THAT MONSTROSITY WAS JUST SITTING THERE.

I took the picture because when I tell people I have a huge honking spider they think I'm overreacting. I am not. This spider should fucking pay rent.

Well, as long as it's on the outside and not the inside, right?

Awww what a pretty lady she is.

You are welcome to her :(((( I do not mind spiders happily in the wild where they belong. I just don't want them hanging out with a massive web all over my bedroom window.

If I were closer to you I'd come remove her. I don't mind spiders really.

I was at least told that this spider is not dangerous to humans, which calmed me down a bit.

So pick her up in a mason jar with a sheet of paper over the mouth and let her out where she can continue to eat bothersome things for you. :)

I would perform the spider translocation, but alas I am almost certainly not near you.

Bit disrespectful IMO

To whom, exactly? The spider?

MOVE. MOVE NOW.

Aww.

Looks like some kind of orb-weaver. Eriophora maybe?

If you need it to leave that area you will have to move the spider, not just destroy the web. They like to rebuild them in the same place. Just a heads up! :)

My guess was Eoscona crucifera based on the ventral pattern, but then I'm not totally familiar with orb weavers (jumping spiders are much cuter).

That genus has a fair bit of pattern variation and they tend to have the thick hairy little legs - whereas a lot of orbs tend to have little dainty ones, and they're found all over the world. I think Australian Garden Orbs are Eriophora transmarina or something like that?

You'd probably know better about northern hemisphere spidies though! :)

[personal profile] ketita 2015-12-09 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the local pest control people destroyed the web once but it's already back. I'm going to try and see if they can come by and trap it.

Some part of me still feels guilty about it, haha. It is a pretty enterprising spider - building a web in front of a window, which will have light shining out of it at night, strikes me as rather smart for attracting prey.

Moths are both plentiful and delicious. Just ask bats!

They are pretty smart about finding good spots!
The orb-weavers we had in our garden would build across gaps in the trees and bushes that insects would fly through. Otherwise known as paths.

The amount of times I'd walk straight into those webs and have spiders stuck to me. Ugh.

Nooooooooo don't fuck it. She is a thing of beauty. If I didn't suspect she would jump on my face and give me AIDS, I would totally keep her. Or him.

Could you have maybe have put that fucking thing in the second comment once comments collapsed, some of the rest of us have fairly bad reactions to those kind of things, you cunt!

KILL YOURSELF!

It's a picture, not the actual animal.

Sorry if you got bitten by one of these critters, but a past traumatic experience does not warrant name-calling.

For future reference, it's common courtesy to put something like this in a reply (as in the picture), especially considering that arachnophobia is a very common phobia and something that might trigger people, myself included. So thanks for that I guess. Not what I wanted to get out of checking yesterday's post.

I didn't know that people would react that way, and since the first comments were all okay (and many even liked the spider), I didn't do anything about it. I apologize for the stress it caused, and deleted the comment (since once it's responded to I can't edit it.)
