Movies You Did Not Expect To Enjoy

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-12-10 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
What are some movies you did not expect to like but did?

I watched Footloose last night and did not expect much from it. I've been watching a lot of "classic" 80s movies that I hate. However, I LOVED that movie. I liked all the characters and the music was fantastic. And I was really happy that the preacher had a way more nuanced character than just "super strict bad preacher dude". And his wife was awesome as well (I love Dianne West).

Tinkerbell films. I thought they were the usual made-for-TV low budget fair. I've never been interested in Peter Pan, and Tinkerbell is annoying. But the movies are so good. I cried my eyes out at the last one. I love the other fairies. And Tinkerbell speaking really helps her out (plus no being jealous over Peter). They're so much fun.

I found these on Netflix and I liked them too!

Same. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the characters, music, and all. Also I agree about the last one. It was gut-wrenching. ;_;

As an aunt, those ARE really good kid's movies. I've not seen the recent ones but the ones I did see were really good.

YES. I actually have watched them more than once and cried multiple times. I'm so sad the line was discontinued.

I had no idea what to expect when I went in to "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" but I loved it so much. I don't think I've laughed or cried that much in the span of one movie ever.

Pompeii. I only went to see it because I needed a relaxer after some stressful things in my life. And because I like volcano-themed things a lot. But it was fun. The reviewers were probably right that it wasn't a great movie. But I don't care, I loved it.

I didn't think I'd like Kingsman all that much, I'm not a huge fan of James Bond movies and to me it looked like that just a bit different, but I actually ended up enjoying it a lot.

It's not deep, thought provoking or anything like that but it's fun and has a villain duo that I absolutely adore, like really current favourite movie villains in recent years.

Wedding Crashers.

I don't like comedies, weddings nor Owen Wilson, so the odds were not in my favour. But my friend likes comedies and I rarely see him, so, oh well. It was actually entertaining.

21 Jump Street. I didn't think you could take that series and make a raunchy comedy out of it, but it was great.

Baby Mama. I went expecting a stupid movie; it was actually quite deep, although as someone who can't conceive and at the time had been wondering if I'd ever use a surrogate, certain things... bugged me. But I did love it. I shouldn't have doubted Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (although I don't think they were as well known at the time).

Terminator Genisys. I mean, I liked the original two, hated the last two. So my hopes for this one were kind of...not high. But I genuinely enjoyed it.

Dredd. I had no idea what I was in for when we went to see it. All I knew of was the Stalone version (never seen it and don't want to), but that movie was awesome.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones aka. the one starring the Latino kid and his friends and not a bunch of WASPy white people.

It was SO MUCH more interesting and well done than all of the rest of them, and much like the SAW franchise I was only watching it because I had seen all the rest and had the "in for a penny, in for a pound" thing going on.

That one was actually enjoyable though.

Mirror, Mirror - I remember seeing a giant poster for it in 2012 (I think?) and thinking it looked okay, but didn't really seek it out. I finally saw it this year and was laughing non stop, and I usually really hate fairytale retellings that make the heroine 'kick ass' and 'strong' because then it just becomes a hamfisted parody.

Ever After - another one of those movies I never saw until really recently, I thought it was like The Princess Bride where so many people had nostalgia for it and I was less than impressed, but it was actually a seriously good, thoughtful movie.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice - Dear god. I was rolling my eyes in the first like fifteen minutes but then more than once did I have to pause the movie to stop laughing. I get why it's ignored, but seriously, it's not that bad and it's really damn enjoyable.

Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, and Inglorious Basterds.

The first Tarantino film I saw was Reservoir Dogs, which I did not like at ALL, so it soured me on him for a while. I'm glad I gave his other works a chance, though. Especially Inglourious Basterds, which was a thing I-never-knew-I-wanted. I'm Jewish, so that movie is the ultimate revenge fantasy for me.

Also, I can't get over how excellent the casting is in all his movies. There's not a single character in any of them I could imagine being played by someone else. Even Reservoir Dogs (which as I said, I didn't like), had a really good cast.

As an 80s teen, it makes me happy that you liked Footloose!

(I'm assuming you're younger than your 40s.)

It just pleases me that other people who weren't my age when these flicks came out appreciate them too. :)

Edge of Tomorrow

[personal profile] silverr 2015-12-10 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
because I'm not so much a Cruise fan, but I did enjoy this.

Emily B. was good as the female lead, the premise was intriguing and well-handled (and allowing you to want to smack Cruise's character in the face at the beginning made the beginnign of the fil m very satisfying); and the inevitable romance angle was applied with a much lighter hand than I had expected.

(And some solid soundtrack music by Christophe Beck helped as well).

Singin' in the Rain. I don't like many musicals and many of the older ones tend to lose my interest quickly.

Everyone was really charming though and it had me throughly engrossed.

Monsters Vs. Aliens. I took my little sister to watch it without knowing anything about it. I really enjoyed it. Also, major points to the movie for not giving the MC a love interest.

Click.

I never thought I'd cry watching an Adam Sandler film.

(I still hate Adam Sandler. But I must admit, Click was good, in a bizarre sort of way.)

Tomorrowland. I largely saw it just because I lust after Hugh Laurie but I normally do not like Disney movies. I wound up liking it a lot.
