Yeah, I really don't know why some people use "PoC" when they actually just mean "black".

Sometimes they mean dark skinned! Dark skinned latino or Indian or middle eastern get lumped in a lot. It's true groups like light skinned latino and east asians get ignored en masse though

Because Americans like to project their own issues onto the rest of the planet.

Not only in the rest of the planet but to ancient civilisations with no concept of whiteness (e.g "The white Roman empire vs POC Persia", "Long ago, all races lived in harmony, but then everything changed when the white nation attacked")

They really do, don't they? Like that recent secret where OP was saying white people shouldn't listen to rap music because it's appropriating "POC". Which is so fucking stupid, and not just because that is NOT want cultural appropriation is.

Rap was invented by a specific ethnic and racial group, African-Americans, not the nebulously defined "POC" which encompasses a metric FUCKTON of racial and ethnic groups.

Don't say POC when you mean black. It's dumb. It makes YOU look dumb.

Ethnically Japanese people who live in Japan aren't POC, though. That term only applies to ethnic/racial minorities in white majority countries (like 'Murrica).

So the whole argument is moot, really.

Yeah but what are the chances that person meant "I wish this Japanese person were ported to Scandinavia" by "I wish they were POC"?

It's still a stupid term to use in this context.

Out of curiosity do you think Ethnic minorities like Okinawans and Ainu in Japan would be considered 'POC'? Not a trick question, just curious because I don't know if they would be myself.

NAYRT - I presume Okinawans and Ainu look almost the same as other Japanese, and I think the term "POC" does not fit discussions about minorities of very similar colouring to the majority they live near.

how about we keep that whole People of color rhethoric to the US where it makes sense, because it has, since the slave trade, been about appearances and "color", while in many other countries, including most in europe, it's about social background that may or may not have a racial component, but usually isn't discussed along those lines?
example: germany: speak of "race" here, you'll be considered a nazi. except if you're an sjw in the right circles, but then you'll be using the english word "race" and not be speaking german which says volumes about the compatibility of these concepts.
I think it's really sad that left-wing progressive people over here take all that stuff and unquestioningly apply it here instead of giving actual black, asian, gypsy and other members of minorities a chance to form solutions that make sense in a european context.

Stuff like this makes me so glad I practically stopped using tumblr. My fandom mood has improved a lot since.

Even by their messed up standards for what qualifies for POC, that's wrong too.

Gen 5 definitely had some black trainer classes as it was based off New York and all. Lenora and probably Iris count as well.

Though most of the dark skinned character before that were in all likelihood just tan. It kills me to see people call Marlon, BW2's last gym leader, POC when you can see the tanlines on him. ORAS Team Aqua's probably the same.

Wait... but you just said POC? That's... not an ethnicity.

There are darker skinned cultures in Japan that have been there a long, long time (Okinawans, Ainu) and would be a welcome addition to historical anime. These people are ostracized and exoticized and wishing they were more present in anime is totally legit. But yeah there's not going to be Latinos in like... Inuyasha or something.

Eh, the Japanese Brazilian community is significant enough that some media presence would be perfectly realistic.

I misread the secret to mean that they meant a historical anime, as in an anime that takes place a long time ago (hence using Inuyasha as an example).

I agree that non-Japanese POC would not be out of place in a modern anime, or at the very least, more hafu characters. You do see them occasionally (i.e. Eli from Love Live), but not very often.
