I'm proud of you for trying. It really is an important show. This and other projects like it need you support.

I'm not sure how I feel about this comment.

I'm currently watching Jessica Jones and yes, while it's definitely great in terms of giving voice to women, minorities and deal with themes not often touched upon...it's also potentially triggering as shit, and no-one should watch a show like that if it makes them uncomfortable just to "support the project".

Are you serious? I love Jessica Jones, but it is just a tv show. No one is required to watch it or a bad person for not watching it. No one who has squicks that are contained in this show should feel required to watch it just because it is "important."

I honestly can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.

Come on guys. This is a troll. They've said this before to stir shit.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Obligatory-Jessica-Jones-anon is a known quantity now. Also a HUGE asshole.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
disagrees with you =/= troll

(I'm not defending them, mind you. But there are people who legit think this way, and dismissing them as trolls just fuels their self-righteousness.)

This comment makes six years until I even think about watching it.

I know it werid to say this, but I kinda like it when movies/tv shows/books/whatever aren't afraid to show abuse victims as bitter, depressed, angry, or vengeful etc. Sadly, the only media I can think from the top of my head that actually does this besides Jessica Jones is Revoultionary Girl Utena and Fruits Basket. The whole, "all abuse victims must always be forgiving and pure" trope is super gross.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
No, I get where you're coming from. It's good to see different reactions from victims, because if/when real people go through trauma they don't feel like they have to conform to some specific way of acting.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I totally get you. In many way there are like, one to two narratives about abuse victims - either forgiving and pure, or crying fragile broken birds. And there are way more ways to respond to trauma than that, and the fact that most media only shows one or two responses can be alienating for people who respond different ways.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well, no. There's also the "homicidal revenge" version, i.e. "Goodbye Earl" and its ilk. Still a cheap trope, though. Jessica's a more interesting character because her abuse MESSED HER UP, not gave her a singleminded Kill Bill vengeance mode. She's self-loathing, self-destructive, and a total bitch to people, because being messed up isn't simple or cute.

Nah, I don't think it's weird to say; like anon above said, we need a variety of reactions. (Because the truth is that people aren't perfect, and everyone reacts uniquely to suffering; a lot of people who go through such traumatic experiences aren't going to come out of it well-adjusted and happy, they're going to be changed. Maybe the change won't be entirely permanent, maybe it will, but I think Jessica's reaction to her experience was an interesting and realistic one. I hope it helps someone.)

I feel this.

Some performances really do make you feel like you are intruding on a very vulnerable, private moment. Season 1 Will Graham made me feel that frequently.

As for the second part of your secret, everyone has a tolerance for how much of an asshole a main character can be before it trips over into unlikable territory. Jessica's relationship with Trish kept her from being too much of an asshole for me. That and her desire to help people.

I loved Jessica's relationship with Trish; it was very heartwarming and allowed us to see a different side of Jessica.

Jessica is far from a perfect person, but I thought the show did a good job of showing that despite her attitude and rough exterior, she did care about people. (She still made some bad decisions and was an asshole at times, but that made her feel more human to me.)

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the roach thing at least was commentary on her view of Kilgrave. But yeah, it's really, intensely into her life.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
IDK anything about this show(?) but this kinda makes me want to watch it now, is that bad?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, the nitty-gritty-ness of it is a big part of why I found it enjoyable.
