I really dislike the implication that a woman has to kick ass in some way, shape or form to be a strong character. Showing "only" mental strenght doesn't make Arwen weaker.

Besides, she and Luthien were in completely different situations, so why make it a thing of competition?

I would go further than that and say that making female characters who succeed via violence are adopting negative male qualities and actively diminish her strength as a woman.

ayrt

Well, I wouldn't go that far. Violence is a behaviour known to both genders.

Though it is true that men easier get a pass for behaving violent while a women will be heavily side eyed once she lashes out.

I just think it weird that certain contexts in storytelling encourage physical violence.

I agree that mental strength is still strength and that a character isn't weak because they aren't violent.

But I really do not like the idea that a violent female character has adopted "male" qualities and is less of a good female character because of it. That's getting into "women need to be strong in THIS (traditionally feminine) way and men need to be strong in this OTHER (traditionally masculine) way." There is nothing wrong with a female character having some traits that have been considered masculine, when a lot of the time both men and women can have those traits, but women just aren't supposed to have them.

This. And this is also gender existentialist: Saying violence is an inherently male trait and that women who are taking it on are becoming like men. No.

+1 to both of these comments.

(I don't have much to say about the actual secret except "Hey, I like Arwen! And as someone who still hasn't finished The Silmarillion I don't feel like I know enough about her to comment at length." (I have read up on her, but it's been a long time.)

Maybe the references are loose ones (their beauty, their romance with mortal men), and you aren't supposed to get the idea that the two characters are incredibly similar?

Pretty much. there are two main links: The look (she looks similar to Luthien though not quite as amazing supposedly) and the story (they both give up immortality to marry a mortal man).

And the characters in Lord of the Rings are all supposed to be lesser than the Silmarillion ones anyway since one of the themes was the decay of the world and that everything was just better in the First Age.

It doesn't sound like there's anything more than a vague similarity.

There isn't. And it was never intended to be anything else. I think the secret maker exaggerates how much of a comparison in the book. The mention is really just about the looks and the fact that both characters share the same fate. It doesn't go beyond that and was never intended to.

Luthien doesn't succeed through violence though. At most, the violence comes from Huan when he kills a bunch of creatures. Luthien just acts as a decoy. She doesn't allow Beren to kill the Feanorians. She uses magic and her wits to outdo Sauron and Morgoth. She's an active character but she's not a violent one.

Luthien and Huan had a pretty good strategy: Huan defeated Sauron through violence, while Luthien defeated Morgoth through her wits. As a side note, I hate it when people say Luthien kicked Sauron's ass when she pretty much fainted when she saw him.
