Did trying to reel in the shotacon demographic help this film succeed?

Hahahaha, no. It was a failure. The film opened in 120 theatres but only made 90 million yen. Other anime movies that opened on 120 screens (like Madoka or Love Live) made 300-400 millions. It didn't live up to the expectations theaters at all. It didn't even manage to meet half it expected earnings in it's opening weekend. Not only that, it couldn't beat other shows that are less popular, with less screens and lesser advertising therefore making it a flop and an embarrassment.

Overestimation at its finest. Should have opened on 60 or 70 screens.

Well then, that solidifies my belief that nothing of value is lost if I skip this instalment, and now I can let Free! permanently enter my past as an unfortunate but fun phase.
