I mean, I'm not OP and I don't have any strong feelings about it really, but I don't see why it's so completely out of the question. Like, you just seem really deadset certain that it doesn't work and I really don't get why.

(Also just to point out that Plant is... I mean, I'm pretty sure he's blond)

I'm not sure it would even be possible to cast Glorfindel, to be honest. He's just supposed to be really noticeably attractive even for an elf and really strong and badass and just unique, even for an elf. I can't see a musician pulling that off at all. I can't think of anyone I think actually could.

Uhhhhhhh... okay, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You say that as if musicians can't be super attractive, or strong, or badass, or unique...

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, it seems like the argument is that no real person could possibly serve as someone's mental model for Glorfindel, because Glorfindel is just too fucking badass?

So fair enough I guess.

It's more the "I can't see a musician pulling that off" part that bothered me.

For that, I meant in terms of acting ability.

Hey, David Bowie. He'd have made a pretty good elf, too.

Not even young David Bowie or Gackt?

Plate o' shrimp! I just said Bowie above.

I also thought of Bowie.

If you're trying to cast "elves," there are a lot of musicians who seem to fit the bill just being themselves. Or in Bowie's case, when he was inhabiting a weird character.

Next to Bowie, my vote goes for 70s Eno:

I don't think of Plant's voice as "elven," but a good and striking singer for a human.

Here he is with Band of Joy in 2011, and sounding extremely like himself: "Ramble On"

"Black Dog" was Led Zeppelin at their bluesiest. Jimmy Page dominates this particular performance, but it shows off Robert Plant's body, so I'm throwing it in.

Plant would later do a bigger and somehow softer arrangement with Alison Krauss: "Black Dog," 30+ years on.

And of course, I feel quite obliged to link "Ship of Fools."

This is a pretty reasonable head-image for Glorfindel. It's not mine, but it's not absurd.
