Re: Safe Spaces

Even the president of the US thinks the whole "everything should be safe place" mentality is stupid.

"Everything should be a safe space" is a different argument from "safe spaces have some value."

And a lot of people seem to spend a lot of time getting really angry at the idea that everything should be a safe space, and then end by concluding that safe spaces are completely worthless.

Because if everywhere can't be a safe space then nowhere should be a safe space. There is no possible in-between.

If you want a safe space, hang out in your bedroom and invite all your friends (that don't have differing opinions from you obvs).

That doesn't make any sense, anon. Why should that be the only way to have a safe space/

Because no one should be required to protect anyone else's delicate sensibilities.

But the whole concept of politeness and courtesy is about protecting other peoples' delicate sensibilities.

Yet people like you always have the most delicate sensibilities, to get so upset about the request that they treat people decently.

A safe space=/=a place where people don't have differing opinions. A safe place would be somewhere where opinions are expressed respectfully and without deliberately seeking out to start an argument (which is not the same thing as a debate): in other words, a space where people are polite.

If the concept of being asked to be polite sounds OMG OPRESSIVE!!!! to you, you may be the one who's oversensitive.
