Yeah! Is it just me or everyone is very into giving out personal information these days? I remember I didn't tell anyone online my first name until I was about 20, yet these people have no trouble sharing pictures of themselves, the city they live in, the name of their schools... It must be a pedo's wet dream.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-14 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG I KNOW. I want to gather them up and be like NO, STOP. This doesn't go ONLINE, AH.

I'm the same way! At MOST, people knew my age, or general age, and MAYBE the state I lived in. Maybe. That was it.

And if I ever did give out any other information beyond that for whatever reason, I had my parents checking to make sure things looked legit.

Yeah it's so...weird.

Like on one hand they're screaming "ew, pedoooos" and on the other hand they have selfies on their tumblr in their underwear and their write a/b/o under their own name.

And like, okay, I'm totally fine with that - but I wonder what that's going to be like in 5 or 10 years when an employer googles them.

ayrt

That creeps me out too. I was terrified of giving out personal information when I was younger (probably because that's when the whole "the internet is a terrifying place full of serial killers and child rapists" idea was being hardcore spread and many "very special episodes" of television shows were being written about it). Hell, I still barely ever give out personal information online. I've never even posted a selfie tbh because I'm probably overly paranoid

DA

Yeah, seriously. I don't think you're overly paranoid now, with swatting and every other goddamn thing. And the sheer amount of social media. I'd be too paranoid about irl people finding me.

I think that's down to Facebook and their insistance on 'real id'. Also google was pushing pretty hard when they launched google +. They want everything liked for marketing purposes, but it changed the way a generation did the internet.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Linked. Not liked. Damn it.

OMG all those tag memes on tumblr asking about all this stuff are so weird to me. Why do you need to know my last name/height/weight/haircolor/sexual orientation etc.
The only things I maybe tell people if they ask is my first name, my age/birthday and which country I'm from.
Anything else people only get after a long time of talking to each other.

I once had an encounter with a person who would not have a fannish conversation with me until I'd answered all their questions about my ethnicity and upbringing. Their reasoning, such as it was, was they needed this information to put my opinions into proper context.

I'm aorry. But who my grandparents were has jack all to do with my feelings on yaoi.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
That's...odd. Wow. I'd be creeped out by that, too.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
And to my complete non surprise, like a good SJW it turned out this person was more interested in scoring oppression points for themselves, stanning other hypothetically oppressed strangers, and being completely horrible to the live people with whom they interacted when their beliefs didn't fall into lockstep. I maintained contact with this person because they were part of a larger social group I was a part of for several months.

It was awful. As soon as it was feasible, I quietly severed all contact, and was a much happier person as a result.

Ha, even five years ago on the internet I wouldn't even say country, the closest I'd get was continent.

I still don't usually tell people online my RL name, and I first got online when I was 20. I also don't like to mention the names of my immediate family either.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I blame social-media. Back in the day, I was too scared to even post because it weirded me out talking to strangers online.
