Question about Reddit etiquette...kind of confused
(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 02:14 am (UTC)(link)I figure since I'm new to Reddit I must've broken some unspoken rule, hence the downvotes, but I'm not sure what it could be. Is it frowned upon to give details when people ask for recommendations? I figured it was okay, since in a previous comment (I've only made a few) I wrote a fairly long repsonse and got some upvotes. But now I'm kind of afraid of posting more just because I don't want to do anything wrong and piss people off. Anyone have any insight on what I did wrong?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 02:29 am (UTC)(link)My suggestion would be to read other posts that have positive reviews with high upvotes and see if there is a big difference between tone or writing style in your OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 02:29 am (UTC)(link)I'm sorry you had a bad experience so early on in your time there. Some corners of the site are filled with more obnoxious people, some with less...and unfortunately, there's often no good way to know which until you spend enough time there.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 03:22 am (UTC)(link)Don't let it put you off posting again. The OP thanked you, and a lot of people will still read and take into account even downvoted posts.
I'm not sure how familiar you are with the 'net culture on a site like Reddit, but it's very different from tumblr, LJ/DW, or other fan-dominated places. People on Reddit (and SA, the various -chans, etc.) tend to have a much more aggressive style of interaction. That includes being much quicker to upvote/downvote, criticize, demand verification, etc. Overall it can feel very intimidating when you first join, but you shouldn't let it drive you away. It just takes a little while to adjust to the difference in atmosphere.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 06:58 am (UTC)(link)don't get too caught up in what gets upvoted or downvoted and just discuss stuff as you wish, is my advice
