Honestly, this sort of discourse has always bugged me. Even if it's something I like, if it's stated as though it's canon, even when it's not, I'll block it. It's so infantile.

Black Widow isn't even that good a character.

OP

I respectfully disagree.

I really feel I'd like her more if she was played by a different actress, Scarlett Johansson is just too robotic in her portrayal for me. I get that she's a hardened spy or whatever, but the delivery of her lines is so flat that her character just comes across as a bland stoic hot girl that fights, rather than an intriguing spy trained to hide their emotions.

The only time I ever cared about Black Widow was in AOU.

Granted I'm approaching this issue from the POV of someone who hasn't read the comics, but I have a hard time seeing what isn't cool about a badass Russian spy who holds her own in the Avengers despite not having any super powers or tons of money for cool armor.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-18 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. I don't think she is the worst character, but she isn't that exciting to me. Maybe if ScarJo had more than 3 expressions...

Frankly I think she's even cooler in the comic books.

You will never see me denying AOU! And I still think the whole, "They were just making her character about babies!!!!" rhetoric is stupid. It is like people purposefully misinterpreted that scene between her and Bruce.

Though, I do think she was a terrible person for forcing Bruce to transform against his will.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-12-17 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Like, could the scene have been written better? Yeah no duh.
But on the other hand, some of the hardcore aou haters are just so blind to basic logic and reasoning, some of the backflips I've seen them do to make natasha a victim and bruce this evil """abusive""" monster is honestly kinda insulting.

Eh, while it was a dick movie I don't think it made her a terrible person. It was a nesscary evil.

I think that, had the thing with her forcing Bruce to transform against his will been played as the shitty thing and violation it was, it could have been an interesting plot moment. But that would have demanded like, nuance and shit.

I always thought that was the reason he left. Hulk realized they could not trust Natasha and got them out of there.

MCU fandom loves to pretend anything that paints a female character in a bad light didn't really happen, see also Peggy Carter in Captain America.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-18 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. God help your soul if you imply that Peggy Carter is in anyway not a perfect Queen.
philstar22: (Default)

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-12-18 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
What exactly are you referring to in Captain America? I mean, sure she isn't perfect (though her faults come through more in Agent Carter). The only thing I can think of was her jealousy at Steve being kissed by another woman and her assumption that Steve kissed back without bothering to ask. Was that what you are referring to? I can't think of anything else that might make her look bad.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-18 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
IN a fit of jealousy she shot a gun at an untried shield. It could have failed and killed Steve. Or it could have ricocheted and and hit someone else.

God, I hate those passive-aggressive smilies.

What? :) How does adding smilies not make you happy? :) Friendly Reminder: Smilies are here to be your friend. :)

I hate them too anon.

It was written very awkwardly, but these people COMPLETELY MISSED what she was trying to get through to Bruce.

She used her sterilization as a way to get him to see that he isn't only who feels like a monster. She was trained her whole life to be one. And when he made the comment about not being able to have children, she made a point that she couldn't either, because of her life long training.

She was trying to get him to see that she didn't care whether they could or not. And that they both really aren't monsters, despite feeling like one. They could have something without all of the so called preconceived bells and whistles.

As far as kids are concerned, she seems to be very content to be that cool Auntie Nat.

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-12-18 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I think the problem is that it was a badly written and easily misinterpreted scene. It wasn't intended to mean that she thought being sterilized made her a monster, but the words chosen conveyed that meaning just as easily as the intended definition. Which is sad because dialogue is usually Whedon's strong point. But there were quite a few scenes in AOU that had problems like this.

Tell me about it, I've been trying to explain this for months.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-18 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Even if you hate the Bruce/Natasha storyline, she did tons of other things in that movie! Why delete all of those from your canon just because you didn't like one thing?

......what? How weird.

I didn't really like AoU, and ignore most of it, but Natasha had some awesome moments in that movie, and frankly, until it got weird, i *loved* her flirting with Bruce, and Bruce being just so very clueless. So cute!
