(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 01:04 am (UTC)(link)As for people who aren't into Saitama for looks, it happens. Some of my ships involve people I don't find particularly physically attractive, but enjoy for their emotionally chemistry.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 01:21 am (UTC)(link)As for being into characters without feeling physical attraction, I feel you there, I have some of those myself (although most characters kind of grow on me a little, and to be honest I'm one of those people who could probably fall in love with a completely alien species, chemistry for me is more about how well I get along with someone, and the more I get along with them, the more sexually appealing I find them), but that's actually kind of the opposite of what we're talking about in this secret. It's all about being super shallow with your ships, not the other way around! XD

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 02:08 am (UTC)(link)If OP were correct about the OPM fandom only being in it for the looks, people /would/ ship Genos with someone else (ex. way more Genos/Sonic fanart). Someone who write a fic about the two of them meeting and it would take off.
Even if they don't find Saitama physically attractive, they find him attractive as a character. Otherwise they would move on to a different show.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 03:59 am (UTC)(link)Someone else expanded on it a bit more, and I guess this is just one of those series where I feel like the OTP stands head-and-shoulders above the other possible pairing combinations so I have a hard time seeing why people are picking up these things. It's like if people started shipping Genos/Amai Mask because they spoke and had tension for like 5 minutes, or if they started shipping Saitama and the scientist guy hardcore.
However, OP is very correct though, in the general sense. I've seen plenty of people bitch about how they only ship [insert pairing here] because of the emotional aspect, and how they wish such-and-such character were hotter, and I've seen plenty of people outright complain that they can't ship such and such pairing because one of them isn't "hot enough", etc.
Maybe in OPM fandom it's not quite as bad, (although Secret!OP's secret sounds very much like it is at times), but like I and other commenters here have mentioned there is a really shitty tendency in fandom to do this.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 02:12 am (UTC)(link)I haven't seen the anime yet, but as far as the webcomic + manga goes, Mumen Rider and Saitama have a pretty cute friendship sort of thing going on. Mumen is a genuinely good guy, and actually respects Saitama, and vice versa. There aren't too many scenes of them together, but the few that there are tend to be noteworthy. It's just great seeing an honestly good character like Mumen when a lot of the heroes are vying for fame and power, and the respect shared between him and Saitama as unsung heroes is fantastic.
With Sonic, I think it just goes back to the friendly enemy kind of thing. Well, friendly on Saitama's side, which is amusing, but kind of obsessive for Sonic. And that has it's appeal, I suppose. For Sonic/Genos, there's the allure of hostility on both sides, but I would chalk up most of their popularity on being the most typically attractive characters in the series.
So yeah, I don't ship any of these pairings, but I can see the reasons why some people might.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 04:04 am (UTC)(link)Mumen Rider, I suppose it just sounds like one of those random side pairings that pops up? I dunno, I guess I can see why some people might enjoy it but I kind of feel like it's the same deal with Sonic and Mumen, I feel like some people just can't enjoy characters as they are.
Although I suppose some people could say the same thing about Genos/Saitama, but I feel that is a bit different since Genos at least is pretty canonly devoted to Saitama, and while Saitama is a little harder to pin down RE: feelings wise for Genos, I think it's obvious he at least likes him and considers him a friend/roommate. The other two characters though, it just seems like one of those "if they're remotely attractive, they need to be banging someone/something" deals.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 04:30 am (UTC)(link)Honestly I'm mostly into OPM for the friendships and comedy and that's what I look for in fandom work (with a side helping of Saitama and Genos, I'll admit). I agree there's a lack of appreciation of characters for what they are without all the added bells and whistles of shipping, but if that's what people want, alright. It can be a bit of a bummer in navigating fandom, especially in regards to certain characters that become eclipsed by a pairing they're in, but at least we have great canon that is already very satisfying.
