I find Saitama more physically attractive then Genos (when he is drawn seriously), but I wouldn't ship them if Genos wasn't so devoted. I would just be into Saitama/Licenseless Rider.

As for people who aren't into Saitama for looks, it happens. Some of my ships involve people I don't find particularly physically attractive, but enjoy for their emotionally chemistry.

GODS YES. To both Saitama being attractive when actually drawn seriously, and the fact that if Genos weren't so devoted my other OTP would be a thing.

And hell yes to emotional chemistry. I remember when shipping was about that. Ah yes, when I was a wee shipper in the TFArmada fandom.

Am I missing something with the whole Saitama/Mumen Rider thing? I haven't gotten into the comics yet so I might be missing something but so far I think the shipping stack is pretty in favour of Saitama/Genos. It's obvious Saitama has grown to feel affection for Genos, and it's pretty damn obvious how Genos feels, but for Mumen Rider all I see is the 'Thank You' note moment and them eating together, that's pretty much it. I'm not disparaging anybody into that ship, I just don't understand it and so I wonder if I'm missing something, which is entirely possible considering I haven't delved into the comics. It's kind of the same with Speed O' Sound Sonic, like I don't really see why people are shipping him with either Saitama or Genos. I think both Mumen Rider and Speed O' Sound Sonic are extremely fascinating characters (Sonic makes me laugh, it's been awhile since I enjoyed a character being a little unhinged so damn much), but I don't really ship them with anybody atm, I just appreciate them as-is.

As for being into characters without feeling physical attraction, I feel you there, I have some of those myself (although most characters kind of grow on me a little, and to be honest I'm one of those people who could probably fall in love with a completely alien species, chemistry for me is more about how well I get along with someone, and the more I get along with them, the more sexually appealing I find them), but that's actually kind of the opposite of what we're talking about in this secret. It's all about being super shallow with your ships, not the other way around! XD

Saitama's monologue to the crowd after he kills Sea King. He does it not for the Hero's group as an institution, but for people who act like true heroes. Something Rider exemplifies. I also really enjoyed whenever they interact with each other. Rider's thank you note showed he respected and appreciated Saitama in turn.

If OP were correct about the OPM fandom only being in it for the looks, people /would/ ship Genos with someone else (ex. way more Genos/Sonic fanart). Someone who write a fic about the two of them meeting and it would take off.

Even if they don't find Saitama physically attractive, they find him attractive as a character. Otherwise they would move on to a different show.

Haha, I was too busy watching Genos make moon-eyes at Saitama during the whole Sea King scene. I thought it was kind of implied that the monologue was about all the heroes that went down fighting the Sea King? Like Saitama was very purposely including Genos, Mumen Rider, Puri Puri Prince, etc, in that monologue. I never got the feeling that from Saitama's side that was anything directed at anyone in particular.

Someone else expanded on it a bit more, and I guess this is just one of those series where I feel like the OTP stands head-and-shoulders above the other possible pairing combinations so I have a hard time seeing why people are picking up these things. It's like if people started shipping Genos/Amai Mask because they spoke and had tension for like 5 minutes, or if they started shipping Saitama and the scientist guy hardcore.

However, OP is very correct though, in the general sense. I've seen plenty of people bitch about how they only ship [insert pairing here] because of the emotional aspect, and how they wish such-and-such character were hotter, and I've seen plenty of people outright complain that they can't ship such and such pairing because one of them isn't "hot enough", etc.

Maybe in OPM fandom it's not quite as bad, (although Secret!OP's secret sounds very much like it is at times), but like I and other commenters here have mentioned there is a really shitty tendency in fandom to do this.

I haven't seen the anime yet, but as far as the webcomic + manga goes, Mumen Rider and Saitama have a pretty cute friendship sort of thing going on. Mumen is a genuinely good guy, and actually respects Saitama, and vice versa. There aren't too many scenes of them together, but the few that there are tend to be noteworthy. It's just great seeing an honestly good character like Mumen when a lot of the heroes are vying for fame and power, and the respect shared between him and Saitama as unsung heroes is fantastic.
With Sonic, I think it just goes back to the friendly enemy kind of thing. Well, friendly on Saitama's side, which is amusing, but kind of obsessive for Sonic. And that has it's appeal, I suppose. For Sonic/Genos, there's the allure of hostility on both sides, but I would chalk up most of their popularity on being the most typically attractive characters in the series.
So yeah, I don't ship any of these pairings, but I can see the reasons why some people might.

Yeah the Saitama and or Geno x Sonic thing is just mainly because people find Sonic hot and they want to see somebody plow him. :P (What ever happened to just enjoying characters as-is?)

Mumen Rider, I suppose it just sounds like one of those random side pairings that pops up? I dunno, I guess I can see why some people might enjoy it but I kind of feel like it's the same deal with Sonic and Mumen, I feel like some people just can't enjoy characters as they are.

Although I suppose some people could say the same thing about Genos/Saitama, but I feel that is a bit different since Genos at least is pretty canonly devoted to Saitama, and while Saitama is a little harder to pin down RE: feelings wise for Genos, I think it's obvious he at least likes him and considers him a friend/roommate. The other two characters though, it just seems like one of those "if they're remotely attractive, they need to be banging someone/something" deals.

Yeah, I totally agree with everything you're saying. I remember first going into the AO3 tags after the anime came out hoping for some good fic, and just being completely bemused by the ships. Ship and let ship, but there are definitely those undercurrents of shipping only attractive characters, or focusing only on the "attractive" half of a pairing.
Honestly I'm mostly into OPM for the friendships and comedy and that's what I look for in fandom work (with a side helping of Saitama and Genos, I'll admit). I agree there's a lack of appreciation of characters for what they are without all the added bells and whistles of shipping, but if that's what people want, alright. It can be a bit of a bummer in navigating fandom, especially in regards to certain characters that become eclipsed by a pairing they're in, but at least we have great canon that is already very satisfying.
