(Anonymous) 2015-12-20 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)I still like Hello, but this is why sometimes I like certain songs and not albums in general. Like with Muse, where I feel if I listen to too many songs I'd get irritated due to sameness. *
*I am aware many people don't believe all Muse songs sound similar

I haven't listened to enough of Adele's stuff to know if this applies to her (it very well might, but I do like the songs I know) but I kind of feel you on the sameness. It isn't even that I hate it or get irritated by it, but after a while you need a break because the songs all start running together, lol.
I like Muse, but think a lot of their stuff has a similar sound to it. The same goes with lots of other bands/artists I enjoy.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-20 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, I think this is why I prefer bands and musicians who take a more storytelling/fictional approach to songwriting. I love a song with a good plot and characters.

Any recs?

follow the adventures of an android through the future
That's a premise I can get behind. Thank you!

(Anonymous) 2015-12-20 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)Sure, I love to rec! Anais Mitchell's Hadestown is fantastic. It's based around the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice:

Have Gun Will Travel's new album is all about the Shackleton expedition in the Antarctic:

Joanna Newsom's Ys is some of the most beautiful and complex storytelling I've ever heard.

Um, sorry if that's an overload!

I know at some point C&C actually released some comics, so they're definitely into storytelling! Maybe I should check out their last few albums.
No overload! It might take me a while to get around to these, but I'm glad to hear new music! I don't know any of these artists too; it's nice. (And the stories certainly sound unique!)
Thank you! <3

Well...no lies detected.
I'm going to bookmark this thread and come back to it when I get the urge for something different. This is a pretty cool idea for a series of albums, though I find it hard to imagine the actual songs. Should be interesting!
Thanks!

My personal favourite album is Eidolon, that particular song is from their latest album.
The band had some drama last year, where Andrew left because he didn't feel he contributed enough to the band(WHAT!?) and they became "The Ghost Apparatus", but then Andrew came back and all was well.
In the latest album, you can practically hear Andrew apologizing for being a delusional dick. Especially in Just a Ride.
/fangirl.

However, I'm glad that things worked out for them! (It's so sad when a good band breaks up.)

(Anonymous) 2015-12-21 12:08 am (UTC)(link)And their other albums, while not telling one cohesive story each, do have plenty of individual songs with characters & story.

This is somehow less shocking than some of the other stuff in this thread, and yet I still love it. Great theme!
Thanks, anon! (Can't say for sure when I'll get to all this stuff, but I'm glad to have this list of new things to try out.)

(Anonymous) 2015-12-21 02:57 am (UTC)(link)Kate Bush's album Hounds of Love is pretty much all stories, some of them science fiction.
The Church got that way sometimes. There's some pretty vivid if trippy imagery in albums like Starfish & Gold Afternoon Fix. (I feel guilty for loving these albums. They were such a nightmare to record that the drummer retreated into his drug habit and left the band maybe forever.)

Wow, that's pretty damn dark... poor guy. I hope he manages to kick the habit.
I would probably feel bad for enjoying it too, but...it's his job, and he would probably want people to appreciate his work even if the experience of creating it was a destructive one.
