Smart phones. I hate them with every fiber of my being. They are the most useless, annoying wastes of money in modern culture.

You just don't like things that are smart.

But I like you nonny ♥

Re: Popular things you hate.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-22 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I mean, they're kind of the opposite of useless! Since they're usually useful for texting/calling people. Or emailing people. Or taking pictures. Or finding directions. Or keeping track of appointments, lists and things. Or spending time playing, like, thousands of games when you're out waiting around somewhere.

I mean, I get why you hate them, they're super expensive, but "useless" isn't exactly the right word!

" texting/calling people."

This could be done with a conventional phone or a non-smart phone.

"emailing"

Computer.

"taking picture"

Camera.

"finding directions"

Map, human being, GPS, or computer.

"track of appointments, lists"

Paper.

"playing, like, thousands of games"

Most of them are not good. NDS would serve you better.

Basically, they do many things--but none of them as well as other, more narrowly-focused devices.

Okay, so... you'll... lug a computer, camera, datebook, GPS, map and NDS around all at once? Awesome, you're stronger than you are smart.

Smartphones let you do all that in a device the size of your hand. No, it's not ideal compared to a proper desktop or laptop, but it's far more convenient.

Anything worth doing is worth doing well, not half-assed. I don't need the datebook (I've never had trouble remembering appointments), the GPS, the map, or the NDS.

A computer, a camera, and a flip-phone are enough. You don't need to be especially strong to carry all that; there are lightweight laptops, though personally I prefer to take a gaming laptop (one reason I don't need the NDS).

(Anonymous) 2015-12-22 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I got a smartphone last year and I use it strictly for texting and internet use. I can't be carrying a laptop with me all the time. And sometimes I see something I want to take a picture of but didn't think to bring a camera.

I guess in Blitzyland that makes me fucking stupid, but whatever, at least I don't look like an idiot lugging a bunch of stuff around.

I don't think you're stupid, nonny. You just have different preferences/tastes than I do, nothing wrong with that.

That's all true, but most of those things are too big/bulky to carry around with you on the go. Either way, something else being just as (or more) useful as a smart phone doesn't change that it's still useful! It's just a matter of deciding if the convenience of having all of those features in a relatively small package is worth the price, I think? For some people it's not, and I can totally understand that.

I have kind of come around to smartphones, but overall I agree with you. I hate how short their lifespan is, exactly because of all these things.
My ideal smartphone would be one that does calling/texting/whatsapp and such, capable of housing my translator apps (though tbh I'd give up my phone translator and buy a manual one of smartphones weren't so goshdarn expensive), mp3 ringtones, maps (because the few times I've needed them, they did save me, even though I still prefer to check ahead of time and not use my phone for it), and I guess it's kind of nice having a camera around and being able to share pictures easily.

I usually take my laptop places with me anyway, and it's a million times more convenient for using the internet.

Re: Popular things you hate.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-22 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
But they do all those things. And in one device. It's fine to prefer the other devices, but it's literally the opposite of true to say smartphones are useless.

That's like saying a coffee can performs the same use as a toilet because you can shit in either one--almost no one would consider a coffee can an adequate replacement for a working toilet.

....what?

Re: Popular things you hate.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-22 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
This is why everyone thinks you're stupid and probably an aspie. Nothing about this analogy makes sense or has anything to do with smartphones.

buddy you're trying too hard

it's totally fine to not like smartphones!!!!! to each his own!!! but like. the answer's right there in what you said. "Almost no one would consider a coffee can an adequate replacement for a working toilet." TRUE: which is why it's a terrible analogy. A LOT of people consider smartphones very adequate for the tasks you listed.

tl;dr JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE A THING DOESN'T MEAN IT DOESN'T DO THE THING IT WAS DESIGNED TO DO

My personal phone is a dumb phone, but I was issued a smart phone at work and it is indispensible. I do a lot of travel/fieldwork for my job - and not fancy travel in airports, but me in an suv in the middle of nowhere kind of travel. It would make things really hard if I had to go all day without email and I couldn't get anything done if I were tied to a hotel room always! Obviously, people got along without it before, but tgat made things take longer and cost more.

I see their usefulness. I just hate how it's become an expectation. Like people asking me 10 times if I can't get WhatsApp or play whatever the online game du jour is.

I also really, really hate people having them on the table in restaurants.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-22 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
i understand the frustration w/r/t people assuming you have a smartphone and it makes me worried that it's such a wide-spread expectation to the point employers and teachers are beginning to assume

maybe it's just Your Pet Peeve in which case i don't mean this question weirdly, but why does it bother you when people have their phones out at restaurants if they're not with you? (unless you meant when they're with you! in which case i get it!)

I heard some people have started playing a game to get this constant rude staring at your phone while in company under control: When at a restaurant(at least during meetings in private), either all smartphones are put away OR placed in the middle of the table (either one). The person giving in first to look at their phone has to either pay for the whole meal or buy drinks or something.
I imagine that might be quite effective if everyone plays along.

I refuse to carry more junk than I can comfortably fit in two pockets, so dinky little phones are a lifesaver for me. I can fit them in the same pocket as a pair of keys, leaving the other pocket free for a wallet stuffed full of various ID cards. (This is also why I don't carry portable gaming systems very often--they can only fit in my pocket if I stuff my keys in with my wallet, which tends to eventually result in my keys digging into my leg.)

I... don't see the point of them. I find using a tablet annoying so the even more restricted functionality of a smartphone wouldn't work with me, and I don't use most of the functions on my non-smart phone anyway, so why would I want a smartphone? Plus smartphone plans are expensive and I can stay on a nice cheap plan with my non-smart phone.

Yes! Another on the flip phone brigade!
