I assume I'll hate this game pretty much entirely because of how the fanbase treats it. But I'm a bit of a shallow hipster about certain things, so.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda assume everyone who hates this game either hasn't played it and wants to be edgy, or they hold socially regressive views and aren't willing to move with the times.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
OP: I played the game several times and am far from socially regressive, I still hate it. The writing didn't appeal to me and the characters were uninteresting. *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I tried playing it. I just didn't like it. So, none of the above.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I can understand not being into it or finding the bullet hell too incomprehensible, but there's no need to shit all over it just because it's ~popular~.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Why did you play a game you hated multiple times?

not OP

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes you gotta prove to yourself that you're right without a doubt.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
OP: I played for the different routes, assuming that at least one of them would appeal to me. I was wrong.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it and I thought the characters were the best part. I can kind of see why you don't though? I did hate how the ending dragged and seemed like it was going to end a million times before it actually did.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's fun and charming but not nearly as mindblowingly amazing as the fandom makes it seem.

The ending was too anime and ruined things for me. I hate it when a story's internal logic gets bent into weird places only to justify some overblown magical galaxy exploding finale. It's just not impressive to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I have a couple friends that thought it was stupid.
I love the fuck out of it, but I get why it wouldn't be lots of peoples' cup of tea. No love lost, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
i've never played this game but i love the music and the freaky-ass flower boss.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't find the characters particularly charming, and I don't find the story all that compelling. But both of these are forgivable aspects.

The two things that really get me are:

- The all-or-nothing nature of the morality system. Yahtzee covered this best when he talked about morality systems like this, and that it really amounts to picking one of two (/three) different games at the beginning, and playing it religiously correctly to that choice. So it's not really any kind of choice.

- And I could even forgive that. There's plenty of JRPGs I've loved that don't have any kind of illusion of choice at all, so it's not the end of the world (although in that case, it's because the story and characters hold up, whereas in Undertale, this hasn't been the case for me). I just can't stand the bullet hell genre, so I find the combat downright painful. And if I want to figure out how to spare the opponent, I need to do it again and again and again and again.

The combat got a little less mind-destroying painful once I got a walkthrough for sparing the opponents, but even then it's a massive, unfun, drag.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Also, don't make me play through a game twice to get the best ending. I hated it when Ghosts 'n Goblins did it, so I'm not giving Undertale a free pass either.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
...But you don't have to play through it again. You literally just need a save before Asgore's fight to go back to. Load that up after Neutraling and you're good.

I liked it quite a bit when I played it, but I admit I'm somewhat baffled by how insane the fandom for it has blown up...like, it was a fun game, but it's not exactly a creative masterpiece. idk. Anyway, nothing wrong with taking advantage of the hype train for money. Keep getting paid, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, it was unique in that the premise is literally, "You the player are not above consequences. You can't erase what you've done, even if you turn off the game and come back."

Here's why your opinion is invalid:

You played a game you hated multiple times. Why do that?

OP: I had to play it several times to get the different endings cos i thought maybe one of them would be decent. But they weren't and I regret it.

Don't be a dick, Kristen Stewart!

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Somebody Undertale's fandom as the new Homestuck fandom and that was enough to put me off from even touching the game for the next god knows how many years.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-28 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Poor Toby should have thought twice before getting involved with Homestuck; it's clearly tainted his work in the eyes of many.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
While I really disagree with everything you said, I can kinda see why some people wouldn't like it. The humor and characters are really tongue-in-cheek and can sometimes be an acquired taste.

As for people asking OP why they replayed it so much, you have to re-play Undertale at least 2-3 times to get the full story, which that alone may also throw people off.

I can't stand how tragically ugly it is

there's a way to make a low pixel count game look nice, and that ain't it
