Raise your hand if you tried Turkish delight because of this book.

(For the record, I always pictured it as a sort of pudding. I was surprised when I found out it comes in squares.)

I did when I was 10 and almost immediately spat it out. I don't like it or any other Arab sweets at all.

Not even Baklava?

Not even Baklava :( Sometimes I'm okay with the taste or the texture of some sweets, but never both at the same time.

You could always try Aplets and Cotlets by Liberty Orchards of Washington state. It's an American form of rahat lokum (Turkish delight), made with ingredients like apples, peaches, pecans etc.

I recommend Lokma (Loukoumades in Greece). I don't like most Turkish sweets like Baklava, but put a plate of Lokma in front of me and there won't be a single one left. They are delicious.

What?! OMG. I flooooooove Baklava.

And is Baklava Arab? I thought it was Greek?

Maybe in Flatland it comes in squares.

What? IDGI.

I think Anon means it comes in cubes (3 dimensions) not squares (2 dimensions).

Well, that's pedantic.

I too thought it was pudding. Was super excited. Tried it about 3 years ago. Sort of disappointed.

Yup. It was tasty, but not worth selling out my immediate family for. Maybe a couple of my more distant cousins, but not close family.

is your icon from MST?

If so, which episode/movie are they doing? That quote alone is pretty funny :)

I did, and I like them. In small doses though as it quickly gets sickly for me.

I'm not sure what I thought it was initially, it shows up in the BBC version and from that I at least knew what it looked like and could tell it was candy.

I quite like it. It's just a kind of gummy candy, but softer and maybe with nuts.

I only ever read the book, which didn't illustrate it or describe it very explicitly, so I had only my imagination to go on.

For years I pictured it as being kind of like Baclava. I was super disappointed when I finally got to try it.

I'm 27 and still want to try it just because of this book. I've just never gotten around to it!

When I was 7 this book was the one my Dad would read a chapter each night to the family, and when he reached that he had actually bought turkish delight to introduce us too!

My brother didn't like it but I was an instant fan.

Aww, that's a neat thing to do with one's family. If I had kids, I'd totally do this!

My dad bought me the books as a child and had some really nice, special Turkish delight on hand for when I got to that part of the books. He let me have some and we discussed the symbolism/metaphorical meaning behind the Turkish delights.

I do love them, but that was kind of a formative experience, eating them with my dad and discussing all this really heavy stuff at a very young age, so whenever I eat them now (which is pretty rarely) I have this weird edge of... tension, I guess. *shrugs*

I'd actually had stuff from applets and cotlets many, many times before I read this, but never realized that was turkish delight. So when I found something labeled as such, I tried it because of the book and was confused, all ... wait this is just faintly flavored applets and cotlets??? That said, I really, really like it.
