Why was the Prime Minister's tea lady called fat when she was clearly not fat in anyway? Is what I've always wondered about this movie.

Ugh, right? I mean, she's a little bigger than the other actresses, but she's not fat by UK standards. A little curvy but not fat - except by mainstream media standards I guess, but even the fact that she's a little bigger than the other women in the movie is easy to miss.

I was just rewatching the Grease movie too, same thing with the actress that plays Jan who is also called fat but she's just as thin as Sandy.

Grease has the excuse that everyone was way skinny in the 50s.

I think that was the point? She clearly isn't fat and who called her like that is an idiot.

Massive fail between script and casting, I think.

Also I think she was supposed to be a Monica Lewinsky joke.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-01 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like that, either. Fat? Not even close.

It's been a while since I saw this, but I always thought that was the joke, that she wasn't fat. Isn't Hugh Grant's character constantly perplexed by people calling her fat, too?

Whether or not it really adds anything to the movie or the character is up for discussion, but it always seemed to me that the film is perfectly aware that she's not fat.

Hmm, my friend went to the UK, England in particular, and she said a lot of people over there were a lot thinner than we are over here (Stateside), so, the actress may be more of what we see over here and think not "fat", but over there she may be chunkier?

That was quite sometime ago though and I'm only posting this as hearsay, so it's most likely wrong. *shrug*

But yeah, Hugh Grant's character was always so O_o?? over those comments cause they were patently untrue.
