Whenever people say "don't watch the prequels" or exclude the prequels when they introduce Star Wars to someone, they always sound super insecure to me, as though they're afraid that someone might like the prequels better and that would destroy their worldview. It's bizarre.

Darling, as someone who thinks the Star Wars movies are just okay movies (I'm not a rabid fan, I watched them once 15 years ago and rewatched them now for TFA), let me tell you that the one who sounds very insecure is you. You don't need to come up with these crazy theories. The reason why people say to exclude the prequels is because the prequels are terrible. They aren't worth the time.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
And yet, if they think they're so terrible, why not let other people decide for themselves instead of telling them not to watch?

Heck, I hate the Hobbit trilogy but I don't tell people not to watch it -- I just say that I didn't like them and I think they're poor movies.

It's not like they are putting a gun to their friends' head, they are just telling them "hey, this thing sucks, you probably don't want to waste your time on it".

I would never tell a friend to not watch something I disliked that is good, but I will tell them if something sucks. And the opposite, if I love something terrible, I wiil tell them that it isn't very good and they'll probably not enjoy it.

Yeah, but with all the parents I've seen who refuse to show their kids the prequel trilogy, it rubs me the wrong way.

Like that People vs. George Lucas documentary with the father who couldn't stand that his kid liked The Phantom Menace... that was some bullshit right there and it made the father look really fucking insecure.

They're space wizard movies for God's sake. Not biblical texts.

If we are talking about kids, then yes, let them watch it. My 9 years old self loved TPM, it's a great kids movie.

Seriously? Seriously asking, what did you like other than Jar Jar and the fact that a little boy was in it? I (a SW fanatic) couldn't even understand TPM, much less enjoy it. I thought the original Star Wars (ANH) was a great kids movie--the plot and its elements are immediately familiar and yet set in an exotic location, it's exciting, it's funny. I don't see any of that in TPM. Admittedly it's been a long time since I've seen TPM but what did you love about it at 9?

DA

Darth Maul. Duh.

The ending lightsaber duel is badass.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I was eleven when TPM came out and it bored the hell out of me.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-04 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
i bet you get so mad if your friend doesn't share your exact tastes and likes something you hate

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
uh no, it's more like as Star Wars fans we don't want people to view the prequels and figure all the Star Wars films are that immensely shitty, and write them off too. I have several friends who have only seen episode 1, or 2, and have decided they don't want to bother with the rest of Star Wars because they're terrible movies. THAT'S why I tell people not to bother with the prequels unless they get through 4-6 and feel a need to have more badly-acted, poorly-CGed backstories.
